Sharing passwords: A dangerous new teen trend? (The Week)

New York ? The joy of intimacy, the thrill of tempting heartache, the angst of concerned parents: Is "pre-marital password sharing" the new teen sex?

"I'll show you mine if you show me yours" used to mean something risqu? between two kids in love. Now, according to The New York Times, it implies something more revealing but less exciting: Swapping passwords. A recent Pew survey found that 30 percent of teenagers ? and 47 percent of girls age 14-17? who use the internet have shared at least one personal online password with a friend or significant other. While such swaps can lead volatile and vulnerable teens to use humiliating online secrets against each other, young lovers aren't deterred. Exchanging email and Facebook passwords with her boyfriend is "a sign of trust," San Francisco high schooler Tiffany Carandang, 17, tells The Times. "I know he'd never do anything to hurt my reputation." Ooof. How dangerous is the new pressure to swap passwords?

Password sharing is "a spectacularly bad idea": You have to admit, "there is something pure and romantic about the idea of sharing everything," says Kashmir Hill at?Forbes. But letting your boyfriend read all your emails is, like Romeo and Juliet, romantic "in a tragic, horrible, everyone-is-miserable-and-dies-at-the-end kind of way." It may seem like a show of trust, but handing over the keys to your online privacy vault is "mutually assured trust destruction." Sex? Go ahead. But "kids, but I urge you to consider digital abstinence."
"Why sharing passwords... is a spectacularly bad idea"

But it's easy to see why teens do this: In a "horrifyingly sad" way, "pre-marital password sharing" is actually kind of like teen sex, says Cassie Murdoch at?Jezebel. "They're both forbidden, frowned upon by adults, and make you feel vulnerable." And teenagers know the risks, at least theoretically, but they still do it, "for the same reason teenagers do most anything, for the thrill." Besides, the kids have a point: In the fire of young love, exposing your online self so completely "is?kind of a big deal."
"Sharing passwords is the new teen sex"

Clearly, we need better protection for online accounts: "Teenagers are hardly experienced enough to make good decisions" about love and passwords, says Michael Santo at?Examiner. And they certainly won't heed the warnings of their elders ? teens all think they're smarter than their parents, maybe because "every tween/teen show" on TV "shows parents as complete idiots." So if we can't eliminate password-sharing, maybe we should kill passwords in favor of something less swappable, like biometrics (fingerprints, iris recognition, and other physical means of identification).
"Password sharing becomes the new teen 'promise ring'"

UN REPORT SAYS AFRICA'S ECONOMY CONTINUES STRONG MARCH TOWARDS RECOVERY

ADDIS ABABA, Jan 18 (NNN-XINHUA) -- Africa's economy continues its strong march towards recovery, defying the global trend, according to the United Nations economic report for 2012.

The World Economic Situation and Prospects (WESP) 2012, which was launched on Tuesday, forecasts Africa to see an increase in its overall growth from 2.7 per cent in 2011 to 5.0 per cent in 2012 and 5.1 per cent in 2013.

This marks a pronounced recovery and a return to the solid growth trend which emerged after the peak of 2008 global economic crisis.

With strong recovery in many African countries, it is hoped that progress of social development goals, the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) in particular, should be accelerated in 2012 and 2013 towards 2015, said Adam Elhiraika, Chief of Macro-economic Analysis Section at the UN Economic Commission for Africa (UN-ECA), who was briefing journalists about the Report.

The Report says relatively strong commodity prices, solid external capital inflows and a continued expansion of demand and investment from Asia will be the important driving forces for the trend.

Countries across the continent will continue to have widely divergent growth outcomes owing to military conflicts, lack of infrastructure, corruption and severe drought, states the WESP.

In North Africa sub-region, Libya's economy is estimated to have contracted by 25 per cent in 2011 in the wake of the recent regime change, but reconstruction is expected to drive a rebound.

Egypt, Morocco, and Tunisia are all expected to see a more pronounced increase in economic growth in 2012. Growth rates in the sub-region will remain constrained by uncertain political conditions, negatively affecting the tourism sector in particular, but the region should see a post-conflict bounce, says the Report.

In East Africa, Ethiopia will reflect continued infrastructure improvements, especially in the energy sector which overshadow the negative impact of drought conditions on agricultural output in some areas.

Kenya will see continued strength in its Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth figure, driven by infrastructure investment, the expansion of the telecommunication sector and increased banking participation rates. Uganda is also expected to see solid growth on the back of large energy investments, states the Report.

The WESP says there is relatively positive outlook for South Africa and energy producers in the region. South Africa is forecast to see stronger economic growth in 2012, underpinned by favorable external demand, continued fiscal stimulus and rising consumption driven by higher wages.

Elevated oil prices will continue to create significant upside potential for oil-producing economies such as Angola, Ghana and Nigeria. However, infrastructure shortfalls, especially in the energy sector, as well as political instability in the Niger Delta will prevent Nigeria from exploiting its full growth potential.

In Angola, the start of operations at a new liquefied natural gas project will boost growth in 2012, it says.

The Report also says despite the relatively solid expected growth trajectory in Africa, unemployment and poverty remain major problems.

Diversification, particularly into activities generating higher value added, a shortage of skilled workers and low productivity are among the underlying causes of the problems.

The UN notes that its economic outlook for Africa is subject to a number of downside risks.

"Debt crisis in Europe and in the U.S. could push the global economy into stagnation, affecting growth in developing countries. Under these adverse developments, Africa's external sector may contract significantly if commodity demand and prices, as well as tourism receipts, decrease," the report says.

In parallel to this, flows of official development assistance, foreign direct investment and remittance might also fall, negatively affecting Africa's development financing.

Such a scenario would reduce growth in Africa by 1.7 percentage points in 2012 and 1.5 percentage points in 2013, led by a pronounced economic slowdown in major economies such as South Africa and Nigeria.

The possibility of adverse weather conditions pose another significant downside risk, given the larger role of agriculture across the continent, says the Report. -- NNN-XINHUA

Perry says he's dropping out of presidential race

(AP) ? Texas Gov. Rick Perry on Thursday dropped out of the race for the Republican presidential nomination and endorsed Newt Gingrich, adding a fresh layer of unpredictability to the campaign two days before the South Carolina primary.

"Newt's not perfect, but who among us is?" Perry said. He called the former House speaker a "conservative visionary" best suited to replace Barack Obama in the White House.

While the ultimate impact of Perry's decision was unclear, it reduced the number of conservative challengers to Mitt Romney. The decision also reinforced the perception that Gingrich is the candidate on the move in the final hours of the South Carolina campaign, and that front-runner Romney is struggling to hold onto his lead there.

Perry had scarcely finished speaking when Gingrich issued a statement welcoming the endorsement. "I ask the supporters of Governor Perry to look at my record of balancing the budget, cutting spending, reforming welfare, and enacting pro-growth policies to create millions of new jobs and humbly ask for their vote," Gingrich said.

Romney reacted by praising Perry for running "a campaign based upon love of country and conservative principles" and saying he "has earned a place of prominence as a leader in our party."

Perry said he decided to suspend his campaign after concluding "there is no viable path forward for me."

Spokesman Ray Sullivan said money was also a factor: "We have spent the bulk of our funds." Perry chose to drop out before Saturday's primary because he wanted to "respect" the state's voters by giving them a choice among other candidates, Sullivan said.

Perry made his decision Wednesday night and began telling staff and supporters, spokesman Ray Sullivan said. The Texas governor called Gingrich with the news Thursday morning to inform the former House speaker of his endorsement.

Sullivan wouldn't say whether Perry intended to hurt Romney but noted that Perry and Gingrich have a long-standing relationship and said Perry is enthusiastic about the possibility of a Gingrich presidency. But Perry will support the candidate who wins the Republican nomination, Sullivan said.

Perry's exit marked the end of a campaign that began with soaring expectations but quickly faded. He shot to the head of the public opinion polls when he announced his candidacy last summer, but a string of poor debate performances and campaign flubs soon led to a decline in support.

His defining moment came during one debate when he inexplicably could not recall one of three federal agencies he had pledged to abolish. He joked about it afterward, telling reporters, "I stepped in it," but never recovered from the fumble.

Also problematic for conservative supporters: Perry's support of a Texas policy to allow children of illegal immigrants to pay in-state tuition rates and his 2007 order to require schoolgirls in Texas to be vaccinated against human papillomavirus, an order later overturned by state lawmakers.

Perry also risked backlash from elderly voters after calling Social Security a fraud and a "Ponzi scheme." He said the popular federal retirement program for seniors was financially unsustainable and pledged to retool it if elected president.

Romney, the former Massachusetts governor considered the more moderate candidate in the race, has benefited thus far from having Perry and several other conservative challengers competing for the same segment of voters. New polls show Romney leading in South Carolina but Gingrich gaining steam heading into Saturday's contest in a state where conservatives hold great sway in choosing the GOP nominee.

Perry's decision to endorse Gingrich does not necessarily mean conservatives will rally behind the former House speaker. Former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum, an anti-abortion champion, is still in the race and last weekend was endorsed by a group of evangelical Christian leaders.

And there is no guarantee the Texas donors who fueled Perry's bid will shift to Gingrich, even if the governor asks them to.

Romney has been working to court them in recent weeks and has also won the backing of former President George H.W. Bush. Several Perry supporters, who spoke on condition of anonymity to avoid publicly discussing their next steps before Perry's announcement, said they have been approached by Romney's campaign and will support him as the candidate most likely candidate to face President Barack Obama in November.

Also in play are at least three influential "super" political action committees supporting Perry. One so-called super PAC, called Make Us Great Again, aired more than $3.3 million worth of ads in Iowa and South Carolina supporting Perry. A spokesman for the group did not immediately return calls from the AP seeking comment about whom the PAC will support with Perry out of the GOP race.

Perry, 61, was relatively unknown outside Texas until he succeeded George W. Bush as governor after Bush was elected president in 2000. A former Democrat, Perry had already spent about 15 years in state government when he became governor. He went on to become the state's longest-serving chief executive, winning the office three times, most recently in 2010.

Part of Perry's appeal came from his humble beginnings in tiny Paint Creek, Texas. He graduated from Texas A&M University and was a pilot in the Air Force before winning election in 1984 to the Texas House of Representatives. He switched to the GOP in 1989 and served as the state's agriculture commissioner before his election as lieutenant governor in 1998.

Perry's success as a politician suggested he would be a strong competitor to Obama. He had never lost a race in Texas, and his fight against Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison for the Republican gubernatorial nomination in 2010 showed how tough he could be on a rival.

Homelessness down but seen rising anew: report (Reuters)

WASHINGTON (Reuters) ? U.S. homelessness slipped 1 percent from 2009 to 2011, but the sluggish economy left more poor people struggling to pay for housing and just a step away from shelters, an advocacy group said in a new study on Wednesday.

The drop to 636,017 homeless people last year could prove short-lived, since it was likely due to $1.5 billion in federal aid that will run out this year, the National Alliance to End Homelessness said in its report.

"The fact that homelessness dropped in the middle of a downturn is counter-intuitive," Nan Roman, the Alliance's president and chief executive, told a news conference.

The federal aid, part of an economic stimulus package, "seems to have worked," she said.

The Alliance, which groups public, private and non-profit organizations, said the biggest decrease in homelessness was among veterans, with the number falling 11 percent to 67,495 in 2011.

The overall decline in homelessness, however small, may not last long. Current trends point to the number of homeless people rising about 5 percent through 2013, Peter Witte, a researcher who compiled the study, told reporters.

In one indicator of possible trouble, the number of poor households that spent more than half their incomes on rent -- defined as "severely housing cost burdened" -- rose 6 percent to 6.2 million, the report said.

The number of people living "doubled up" with friends, relatives or others jumped 13 percent to 6.8 million. "Doubling up" is the usual step before people move into shelters, Witte said.

Robert Rector, a senior researcher with the Heritage Foundation, called the slight decline in homelessness "pretty startling" in light of the worst U.S. economic downturn since the Great Depression.

He said the federal aid, although worthwhile, had played only a small part in easing homelessness.

The slowness of mortgage foreclosure proceedings, which can run up to two years, means that more people can stay in their homes. "Doubling up" and the number of families with two incomes has also buffered the impact of the downturn, he said.

"I think the system has actually worked extremely well -- the whole system, meaning how the banks treated the foreclosures and how the homeless shelters system worked," Rector said.

Although the homeless population fell nationally, it rose in 24 states and the District of Columbia, which had a homeless rate of 108 for each 10,000 people.

The metropolitan area with the highest rate of homelessness was Tampa-St. Petersburg-Clearwater, Florida, at 57 per 10,000 people. Among the states with the highest rate were Oregon and Hawaii, at 45 per 10,000 people.

The national rate was 21 per 10,000 people.

The figures are based on data from U.S. agencies, including the Housing and Urban Development Department, and RealtyTrac, a real estate research group.

Was the Cancer Cell Smiling?

This unique finding is rather ironic as the diagnosis of cancer is capable of wiping the smile off victims? face.

There have been few other times in medical history when a human like image has revealed itself in unexpected places.

Professor Beric Henderson, head of the gene expression laboratory, said: ?We have actually never seen anything like it before. People here were getting very excited by the image. It can get very dull and boring. It certainly causes eye strain and some might say some mental health problems as well."

What is SOPA? (Politico)

If you think ?SOPA sounds like Mexican soup and PIPA is the fetching sister of a certain princess, you can be excused for wondering why Wikipedia, Reddit and thousands of other websites are blacking out in protest Wednesday.

But SOPA is the Stop Online Piracy Act, now pending in the House of Representatives, and PIPA ? or the Protect IP Act ? is a companion bill now pending in the Senate.

And if you want to know why everyone?s so upset, well, here?s why.

What?s the big idea?

SOPA and PIPA are designed to crack down on websites based offshore that peddle illegal content ?? think pirated Hollywood blockbusters and fake Viagra. No one disputes that that?s a worthy goal. The rub is whether it would give the government and copyright holders too much control over the Web.
?
Here?s how it would work: If the Justice Department or a copyright holder believed a site was directing users to pirated content, they would go to court. Depending on who?s complaining, different remedies would come into play: In some instances a judge could order an Internet service provider like Verizon to cut off access to a site. In others, a search engine like Google could be directed to delete links to an infringing site. The idea is to starve the offending sites of the web traffic that keeps them in business.

Why?s it such a big deal?

What?s happening now on the Web, the bills? backers say, is nothing short of rampant unpoliced theft of American goods. According to the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, so-called ?rogue? sites draw hundreds of millions of clicks a year ? at a huge toll to the American economy. The business lobby cites research by brand protection firm MarkMonitor estimating that illegal sites cost legitimate businesses more than $130 billion in revenue annually.
?
Enter SOPA and PIPA.
?
Will the government be able to censor the web if the bills pass?

That?s the crux of the debate. Google and First Amendment scholars like Harvard?s Lawrence Tribe argue that SOPA would squelch free speech by giving private parties power to effectively cripple sites that allegedly ? but not conclusively ? steal copyrighted content. The simple filing of a complaint, they say, would exert huge pressure on the Internet ecosystem to blacklist an accused site. They also say it would give the feds dangerous new powers to go after sites for political reasons.
?
Nonsense, supporters say. The bills, they say, are narrowly crafted to target overseas sites that are ?dedicated to theft of U.S. property.? Web companies are resorting to hyperbole and hysteria to maintain the status quo, backers argue.

Who wants the bills to pass?

The biggest backers of the antipiracy bills are the industries hardest hit by online piracy: the makers of music and movies. The Internet, and the explosion of illegal copying and sharing of music and movie files that came with it, has been economically devastating for Hollywood and recording studios, and they?ve been pushing lawmakers for years to hold Internet platforms more accountable for the illegal content that flows through their servers. The bills are also backed by makers of pharmaceuticals and luxury goods that want to strangle the market for knockoff goods. All told, hundreds of businesses led by the chamber are pushing hard for the bills.

Gaming Industry Spent As Much As $190000 Pushing for Senate ...

Gaming Industry Spent As Much As $190,000 Pushing for Senate Version of SOPA Last Spring and SummerMany gamers and video game companies can't stand the Stop Online Piracy Act and its companion bill the Protect IP Act (PIPA). But the Entertainment Software Association, the lobbyists who stage E3 each year and defend gaming's freedom of speech rights, thinks PIPA is a good idea.

And they're paying to support the legislation.

Lobbying records for the second and third quarter of 2011 indicate that the ESA, which spends more than $1,000,000 lobbying politicians about video games every three months, paid two firms a combined $190,000 to lobby about PIPA and other issues.

Supporters say the bills would fight online piracy. Critics say that the bills, if passed, would stifle free speech online and disrupt the workings of the Internet.

The ESA has used two firms to try to convince politicians how to shape the Protect IP Act. They paid the Smith-Free Group $60,000 between April 1 and June 30 for "discussions relating to online infringements of intellectual property" relating to the Protect IP Act as well as for lobbying for non PIPA/SOPA causes. The same group was paid $50,000 in the summer for a similar array of causes, which also included education, energy and tax policy as it related to the gaming industry.

The ESA paid the Franklin Square Group $40,000 in the spring and another $40,000 in the summer to lobby for a batch of causes including the immigration of highly-skilled workers and for PIPA.

The filings don't indiciate what position the ESA's people took on PIPA, but the gaming group has made it clear in recent weeks that they support the legislation. The records also don't take into account any lobbying about PIPA or SOPA that was done in the winter. Those records should be filed in the coming days.

I contacted the ESA for comment about their lobbying efforts, but they did not respond by the writing of this post. If they do, I'll add it here.

HBT: Nolan Ryan 'optimistic' about signing Darvish

The Rangers have less than a week to work out a contract with Japanese right-hander Yu Darvish, for whom they committed a record $51,703,411 posting fee back in mid-December. But there?s no concern within the organization about the ticking clock.

According to Richard Durrett of ESPN Dallas, Rangers president Nolan Ryan said Thursday night that he?s ?optimistic? about reaching a deal before next Wednesday?s deadline. Here?s the quote:

?My expectation is that we?ll get something done,? said Ryan. ?It?s a process, so during the period that we negotiate with someone, we really don?t talk about it. I?m optimistic.?

The Rangers? first offer to Darvish was said to be in the range of the six-year, $52 million contract that Daisuke Matsuzaka signed with the Red Sox in December of 2006. Darvish, meanwhile, is reportedly seeking?a deal worth closer to $75 million in total value. So there?s likely still work to be done.
