Popular Southern California Restaurant Chain Announces an ?Orange Chicken? Burger

Slater?s 50/50, the hot new burger concept out of Southern California that popularized a signature meat patty made of 50% beef and 50% bacon, has just launched?revealed their burger of the month for January and the subsequent new year ? the Orange Chicken Burger.

Known for their fun and inventive burgers, this new limited-time menu addition features crispy strips of orange chicken topped with sweet coleslaw, roasted red peppers, grilled pineapple, green onions and Sriracha mayo. Yes, we know it?s not a ?burger,? but the concept is so interesting we?ll overlook that small bit of confusion at the possibility of a fun new taste.

Chinese food in a burger? Count me in for a trial run!

The $10.95 option is available at three of the chain?s California locations in Anaheim, Huntington Beach and San Diego.

EA, Nintendo, and Sony still support SOPA through ESA backing

Tue, Jan 03, 2012 | 17:48 GMT

Despite reports over the holidays that EA, Nintendo and Sony have dropped support of the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) bill currently floating around in the US House and Senate, the firms have only been removed from a list of official supporters compiled by the House Judiciary Committee.

According to a report on The Raw Story (thanks, Blue), each firm is still standing behind the bill, albeit in proxy. Each company is a member of ESA, an industry lobbying group which supports the bill in full, as one of it?s main purposes is to help curb online piracy of games in a similar vein to the movie industry?s MPAA and the music industry?s RIAA.

ESA also has a piracy monitoring division, and lobbies Washington representatives each year on behalf of gaming companies that are members of the association.

However, not all large tech and gaming firms are completely behind the bill. Back in November, the Business Software Alliance (BSA) which includes members such as Apple, Microsoft and Adobe, requested the bill be altered in a way which would fight copyright infringement without censoring freedom of speech. BSA president Robert Holleyman admitted SOPA needs work and ?valid and important questions have been raised? regarding the bill.

Meanwhile, hackivist group Anonymous has said it plans to target Sony over its support of the bill, but intends to do it in a manner that will avoid the public backlash it received over PSNgate last year.

As St. Paul Ford plant waned, many workers were slow to prepare for layoffs

ST. PAUL ? When the last Ranger pickup truck rolled off the assembly line at the Ford Motor Co. plant here in December, it came five years after Ford announced plans to close the plant. And yet it managed to catch many employees unprepared for life's next step.

It's a theme that's become all too familiar for union leaders at shuttered plants around the country who have watched workers cling too long to high-paying jobs.

For Travis Johnston, 36, of River Falls, Wis., it made sense to ride with Ford as long as he could. He often worked more than 50 hours a week for $28 an hour plus overtime, leaving him exhausted and with little incentive to find a job that would almost certainly pay less. After 11 years with Ford, he only recently updated his resume and began looking for another job.

?Honestly, the biggest part of it is the pay,? he said.

In 2006, Ford announced it would shut down the plant and offered its employees buyouts. Then the company brought back hundreds of workers under special terms and kept the plant running.

?We kept getting these extensions,? Johnston said. ?When we didn't get it (this summer), it really started to sink in.?

The plant had about 1,800 hourly workers in 2006. In 2007, the state's dislocated worker program started signing up employees, helping them write resumes, network and sharpen their interviewing skills, while acting as a gateway to subsidized job training.

State figures show 1,050 employees enrolled and more than 300 finished. Of those who finished, 90 percent got jobs and 96 percent of them were still employed six months later. Forty-six percent of those who finished earned a diploma or professional certificate through the program's training benefits.

Anthony Alongi, director of Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development's dislocated worker program, said such programs never get all employees in a mass layoff. Many transfer to other plants, he said, some retire, others get jobs on their own, and some simply refuse to seek help.

He said more workers might have completed the program if Ford hadn't granted so many extensions keeping the plant open.

?If you were a Ford worker, you could be forgiven for thinking that maybe it would stay open a little bit longer,? he said.

Wayne Young, supervisor of the dislocated worker program for Ramsey County, which contracts with the state to provide services to the workers, said the number of Ford workers who showed up for registration events spiked as the final closing date neared.

?It's not unusual for people in large-scale layoff situations to be a bit in denial that it's ending,? he said. ?I kind of got that feeling from the folks we have been seeing on the past couple of registrations.?

Ford spokeswoman Marcey Evans said about two-thirds of the 800 employees can transfer to other Ford locations, including assembly plants in Chicago and Louisville, Ky. Employees who took a $100,000 lump-sum buyout in 2006 cannot transfer, a restriction that affects Johnston and many other senior workers.

Greg Audette, who worked at the plant for 20 years, said he now regrets taking the money.

?If I had known it would be like this, I never would have taken the buyout,? he said. ?I would be transferring now.?

Instead, he said as he walked out of the plant and into the cold as the plant closed, he was going to start looking for work.

?I guess I'll go look for job, take some time off, figure it out,? Audette said.

It was a similar situation when Chrysler shut down its assembly plant in Newark, Del., in 2008, said Richard McDonaugh Jr., former president of the local autoworker's union. More than 1,000 workers lost their jobs and only a few of them could transfer to other Chrysler plants. Many who didn't take advantage of job training programs are still looking for work, he said.

?The economy is going down the toilet and they are going down with it,? said McDonaugh, who now works for the Delaware Department of Labor enforcing labor laws. Several families have broken up because of the stress, he said, and at least two former employees have committed suicide.

At Ford's St. Paul plant, Sylvia Rutledge was one of the workers who took advantage of everything the state and company offered. A few days before the plant closed, she had plans A, B, C ?and C? and D,? she said. ?If one plan falls through, I've got another to fall back on.?

Rutledge passed up the $100,000 buyout and picked a Ford severance program that paid for college tuition. She used it to get a medical assistant's degree, studying on a laptop during breaks when she was called back to work. She figures she's only a year of study away from earning a nursing degree.

Once her daughter graduates from high school in the spring, she might try for a transfer to the medical department at Ford's Louisville plant, work as a medical assistant or go back to school to finish her nursing degree.

?I got a few options,? she said. ?That's what everybody should have done because we've been knowing about this for five years. I don't plan on being caught unaware.?

(AP) ? All year long Eric LeGrand inspired Rutgers from his wheelchair.

How could the Scarlet Knights ever slack off when their former teammate stayed so positive, was so sure he could overcome a devastating spinal injury and one day walk again?

After Rutgers completed its season with a 27-13 victory over Iowa State in the Pinstripe Bowl on Friday, it was time for the Scarlet Knights to thank LeGrand.

"Hey Big E! Hey Big E!" coach Greg Schiano shouted into the microphone as he stood at midfield at Yankee Stadium with the bowl trophy and pointed toward the press box. "This one's for you buddy."

LeGrand, paralyzed after making a tackle during a game last season, was shown on the huge video scoreboard while Schiano spoke ? busting out a wide grin.

"My heart kind of jumped because I wasn't expecting it," LeGrand told the AP in a phone interview.

He then went to the locker room and celebrated his friends. He said he even did a little shoulder dancing.

"That's our brother before and after the injury, and that's how we're going to treat him forever," Rutgers linebacker Khaseem Greene said. "Just having his presence around, it's amazing. He makes the locker room glow."

On the field, a couple of redshirt freshmen lit it up for the Scarlet Knights. Brandon Coleman hauled in an 86-yard touchdown pass in the fourth quarter after Iowa State trimmed the lead to 20-13, and Jawan Jamison ran for 131 yards and two scores on 27 carries.

"That's what we love to do. That's who we want to be," Schiano said about a running game that struggled much of the season, but seems to be in good hands going forward.

The Scarlet Knights (9-4) ran their bowl winning streak to five and improved to 2-0 this season at Yankee Stadium, where they beat Army last month. Rutgers, which played in one bowl game before 2005, is 5-1 in the postseason under Schiano.

The Cyclones (6-7) finished on a three-game losing streak, their last win coming Nov. 18 in Ames, Iowa, when they pulled off the biggest upset of the season against Oklahoma State.

That night Jared Barnett threw for 376 yards. In this game, Steele Jantz, who started the first six games, relieved Barnett in the second quarter and helped pull the Cyclones to 20-13 in the fourth on Jeff Woody's 20-yard touchdown run with 10 minutes left.

"We were not executing in a manner that I felt was going to lead us to a win, and from what we've seen in December's practices, made the switch," Iowa State coach Paul Rhoads said about the quarterbacks.

After an exchange of punts left Rutgers deep in its own end, Chas Dodd went deep to Coleman. The 6-foot-6 Coleman went over 5-7 cornerback Jeremy Reeves, then outran the corner to the end zone to make it 27-13 with 5:47 left.

It was Coleman's only catch, but it turned out to be the play of the game.

"I didn't go out there trying to make a play. I just went out there trying to do my job," Coleman said. "The number was called but I was still calm, cool and collected."

Rutgers grabbed a 7-6 lead early in the second quarter when Jamison powered through a tackler and scored on fourth-and-goal from the 1. On the next possession, Iowa State couldn't handle one of Rutgers' many blitzes, and Greene and Wayne Warren swarmed and stripped Barnett. Scott Vallone scooped up the fumble and returned it 12 yards to the Iowa State 4. The Cyclones managed to hold Rutgers to San San Te's 21-yard field goal.

Jantz replaced Barnett on the next Iowa State series.

The Cyclones didn't hold up as well on Rutgers' next possession. The Scarlet Knights marched 66 yards, 49 on the ground, and Jamison juked his way into the end zone from 12 yards out to make 17-6.

Justin Francis finished Rutgers' strong second half by blocking Zach Guyer's 44-yard field- goal attempt with 57 seconds left.

Iowa State jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the first quarter, with Guyer kicking field goals of 40 and 46 yards on the Cyclones' first two possessions. Inaccurate throws by Barnett were key to stalling each drive.

The redshirt freshman was 2 for 7 before giving way to Jantz, who was 15 for 31 for 197 yards and ran for 36 yards.

"Most of it falls on the offense not executing and not what they did," Jantz said. "Not to take away anything from them because they have a great defense, but then again it ultimately comes back to me because I run the offense."

The Scarlet Knights missed the postseason last year for the first time since 2004, but rebounded this season to challenge for the Big East title behind a defense that came in ranked 14th in the nation.

Greene led the charge Friday with 13 tackles, three for losses, before being carted off in the fourth quarter with an ankle injury. The junior was on crutches after the game and said he thinks he'll be OK in the long run.

Just like LeGrand.

"To have him in the locker room right now with all his buddies, that's special," Schiano said. "That's his senior class."

After Schiano made his short postgame speech, the fans in Yankee Stadium chanted "Eric! Eric!"

"Honestly, this was picture perfect," LeGrand said. "The only thing that would have made it better is if it could have run out there with them."

Survey: Facebook-related divorces on the rise

msnbc.com

By Athima Chansanchai

A survey by a UK-based divorce website shows that Facebook figures prominently in one-third of divorce petitions, an increase of 13 percent from two years ago.

Of course, Divorce-Online is in the business of dealing and profiting from the breakup of marriages, so take the results as you will, but the blog post?describes how 5,000 petitions were reviewed recently, as in 2009, and 33 percent of them contained "Facebook."

The top three reasons Facebook was cited in these petitions:

  • Inappropriate messages to members of the opposite sex.
  • Separated spouses posting nasty comments about each other.
  • Facebook friends reporting spouse?s behavior.

So, not only are people using Facebook to hook up with lost loves and make new ones, but they're also using their virtual walls to wage public relations wars with their soon-to-be ex-spouses.

?Social networking has become the primary tool for communication and is taking over from text and email in my opinion," said Mark Keenan,?founder and CEO of Online Legal Services Limited, the parent company of Divorce-Online. "If someone wants to have an affair or flirt with the opposite sex then it's the easiest place to do it. Also the use of Facebook to make comments about ex-partners to friends has become extremely common with both sides using Facebook to vent their grievances against each other. People need to be careful what they write on their walls as the courts are seeing these posts being used in financial disputes and children cases as evidence.?

In the U.S., Facebook has even more clout in divorce proceedings. In 2010, the 1,600-member?American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers?(which focuses on the end of matrimony, as it were)?cited a survey?that linked Facebook to one in five divorces, with 81 percent of those lawyers focusing on social media as the new affair hotbed. And the hottest of all was Facebook, with 66 percent of those AAML sources mentioning it specifically for evidence of marital discord and misconduct.

In September, a Connecticut judge ordered a divorcing couple to hand over each other's Facebook passwords to aid the discovering process in legal proceedings that included a custody battle.

Of course, on the other end of the spectrum are those who don't blame Facebook, as it is just the latest medium by which the unfaithful carry out their transgressions. People, they say, will always find a way to cheat. It's about establishing boundaries both spouses will respect. As an article on DadsDivorce.com puts it, "It?s not fair to blame Facebook or Internet dating sites because they are just the vehicle ??not the driver."

Take our poll and let us know if and how Facebook figured in the dissolution of your marital happiness.

Breast cancer survivors benefit from practicing mindfulness-based stress reduction

ScienceDaily (Dec. 29, 2011) ? Women recently diagnosed with breast cancer have higher survival rates than those diagnosed in previous decades, according to the American Cancer Society. However, survivors continue to face health challenges after their treatments end. Previous research reports as many as 50 percent of breast cancer survivors are depressed. Now, University of Missouri researchers in the Sinclair School of Nursing say a meditation technique can help breast cancer survivors improve their emotional and physical well-being.

Yaowarat Matchim, a former nursing doctoral student; Jane Armer, professor of nursing; and Bob Stewart, professor emeritus of education and adjunct faculty in nursing, found that breast cancer survivors' health improved after they learned Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR), a type of mindfulness training that incorporates meditation, yoga and physical awareness.

"MBSR is another tool to enhance the lives of breast cancer survivors," Armer said. "Patients often are given a variety of options to reduce stress, but they should choose what works for them according to their lifestyles and belief systems."

The MBSR program consists of group sessions throughout a period of eight to ten weeks. During the sessions, participants practice meditation skills, discuss how bodies respond to stress and learn coping techniques. The researchers found that survivors who learned MBSR lowered their blood pressure, heart rate and respiratory rate. In addition, participants' mood improved, and their level of mindfulness increased after taking the class. Armer says, for best results, participants should continue MBSR after the class ends to maintain the positive effects.

"Mindfulness-based meditation, ideally, should be practiced every day or at least on a routine schedule," Armer said. "MBSR teaches patients new ways of thinking that will give them short- and long-term benefits."

Armer says the non-pharmaceutical approach works best as a complement to other treatment options such as chemotherapy, radiation and surgery.

"Post diagnosis, breast cancer patients often feel like they have no control over their lives," Armer said. "Knowing that they can control something -- such as meditation -- and that it will improve their health, gives them hope that life will be normal again."

The study, "Effects of Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) on Health Among Breast Cancer Survivors," was published in the Western Journal of Nursing Research.

Barbecue Pork Ribs ? Chinese-Style

There?s no doubt that melt-in-your mouth barbecue ribs are hard to beat. That easily explains the popularity of places such as Famous Dave?s and Arthur Bryant?s.

Both of those establishments feature Midwest-style ribs ? Famous Dave?s in the St. Louis-style and Arthur Bryant?s in Kansas City tradition. I?ve eaten the ribs of both and find them most tantalizing, but there are other ways to fix pork ribs that are as equally tasty.

One such way is the following Chinese recipe that I came across recently. The ribs are coated with a glistening honey sauce and have a peppery bite. And according to the article I read, the glaze is delightfully sticky, making finger licking a necessity.

And that?s the way barbecue ribs are supposed to be.

Barbecue Pork Ribs
3 pounds pork ribs, spare ribs or baby backs
2 tablespoons sugar
1 tablespoon salt
1 tablespoon black pepper
? cup rice wine
? to ? cup Chinese spare rib sauce, preferably Lee Kum Kee brand
? cup plus 2 tablespoons honey
In a large baking dish, rub the ribs with the sugar, salt, black pepper and rice wine. Pour over the spare rib sauce and rub it onto the ribs. Cover and place the ribs in the refrigerator to marinate, at least 4 hours but preferably overnight.
Heat the oven to 350 degrees. Place the ribs in a large roasting pan, pouring over any extra liquid. Bake the ribs for 30 minutes.
Remove the pan from the oven and brush the honey on the ribs. Place the pan back in the oven and continue to bake for another 30 minutes, or until the ribs are done. Place under the broiler for 2 to 3 minutes to crisp the outer layer of the ribs, if desired, before serving.
Yield: Serves 6.
Approximate nutritional analysis per serving: 622 calories, 33 grams protein, 48 grams carbohydrates, no fiber, 32 grams fat (12 grams saturated), 128 milligrams cholesterol, 45 grams sugar, 2,995 milligrams sodium.
