Holiday Gift Guide: Giada for Target Helps with Holiday Entertaining ...

Happy Thanksgiving!? How?s the cooking come along?

Holiday cooking and baking is one of my favorite things.? I love spending some quality bonding time in the kitchen with my mom and sisters; it?s the best time to talk about our families and all of the fun things that are going on during the holiday season.? It also makes all of the entertaining we have to do less stressful because we actually enjoy the time together!

I was ecstatic when I was asked to try some items from the Giada De Laurentiis for Target line.? Not only do I love to try new baking and cooking gear, but I just love Giada!? I was sure she was going to have some quality and user friendly items and I couldn?t wait to try them.

I received her bakeware and kitchen tool set, as well as some black olive tapenade and an herb foccacia bread kit.? It felt like Christmas came early!? Here is what it included:

Giada De Laurentiis for Target 5-piece Bakeware Set:

  • 1 Baking sheet
  • 1 ? 9? Springform pan
  • 2 ? 9? baking rounds
  • 1 ? 12-cup muffin pan

Giada De Laurentiis for Target 5-piece Gadget Set:

  • Stainless steel can opener
  • Stainless steel ice cream scoop
  • Stainless steel pizza wheel
  • Stainless steel peeler
  • Silicon whisk

And 2 boxes of Giada De Laurentiis? Herb Foccaccia Bread mix and Black Olive Tapenade.

Let the festivities begin!

Since I am in charge of the Brussels sprouts for Thanksgiving and Christmas dinner in my family (I?m sorry for those of you who do not like them, you are really missing out!), I decided to first use the baking sheet for baking them.? Usually, I line my baking sheet with aluminum foil for an easy cleanup, but I wanted to test this baking sheet so I put everything directly on the cooking sheet.

The pan cooked my Brussels sprouts beautifully, the sheet never once tweaked in the oven (I have that issue a lot with my other sheets), and it was so easy to clean after ? I won?t ever use aluminum foil again!? I loved it.

I made some muffins for breakfast since my husband loves them so much and the muffin pan was easy to clean as well.? I didn?t use cupcake holders and they came out of the pan really easily.? I also used the ice cream scoop to put the mix in the muffin cups and it worked beautifully!? I loved how easily it came off the spoon with the lever feature.? I usually prefer the more simple gadgets, but I love this extra feature that makes scooping your baking treats so much easier and less messy!

I used the baking rounds to make Giada?s yummy Herb Foccaccia Bread and it was delicious!? So easy, too.? All I needed was a little bit of Olive Oil and the rest is already in the box! ?I used the pizza wheel to slice the bread and it was perfect.? I love the convenience of a good pizza wheel!? And once again, the round tin was another easy-to-clean item!? Can you tell what things are important to me?? My sister is the cheesecake baker in our family so I am bringing her the springform pan to use on Thanksgiving day.? Judging by the way the other items worked, I?m sure it will be great!

Her kitchen gadget set also comes with her delicious marinara sauce recipe, which I decided I had to try.? I got to use the peeler for the carrots and the can opener for the canned crushed tomatoes.? Both worked beautifully.? I loved how easily the peeler peeled the carrots ? very little pressure needed for a clean peel, and the can opener was super simple to use and had a really nice grip to it.? I think my old peeler and can opener are going to be moved to the camping box to make room for these new beautiful stainless steel gadgets in my kitchen for everyday use.

I not only used the pizza wheel for the bread, but also for making my first lattice pie!? It cut really nice and clean lines that allowed the dough to separate without ripping.? I had to beat an egg as well for it so I got to use the silicon whisk.? I love the fact that it is silicon because I have a few recipes that require whisking but you can?t use a wire whisk or a fork, so this is perfect and so much more versatile.

I have to hand it to my girl, Giada.? She knows her stuff in the kitchen and she has definitely made it better for us with her new line at Target.? It?s great that such respected chefs will make affordable products for everyone to use that work great!? I mean, if you watch food shows, I?m sure you know and love Giada, but even if you don?t, I?m sure you love Target!

Time to celebrate this cooking and baking season!? Happy entertaining!

Ensuring A Positive Reputation Online - bhw.com - Brighthouse Web ...

Since days long before the Internet came into existence, the value of a positive reputation has been known. It affects your ability to market new products and services, advertise existing ones, and posture yourself for SEO. While advertising budgets and experience are both important, a positive reputation is even more effective at driving business. A bad reputation, on the other hand, cannot be overcome by lower prices or any amount of advertising. Today, maintaining a positive reputation is a bit more complicated than it was in the past.

How the Internet can improve one?s reputation?

The Internet provides several ways to build and maintain one?s reputation. Social media platforms allow users to create pages that customers can "like" and share with friends; this is, essentially a form of free advertising that everyone should take advantage of.?

Further, creating and hosting a website is fairly cheap, and a good website can give a business an appearance of professionalism. Search engine marketing strategies can be used to attract the attention of those using major search engines. The Internet also provides one of the best forms of advertising around today; pay-per-click advertising is both affordable and effective.

How the Internet can damage one?s reputation?

With the advent of popular social media platforms, users are communicating with each other throughout the day and sharing information about their experiences. These conversations often occur in public spaces and are archived indefinitely. The permanent and unfiltered nature of the Internet can easily cause one?s reputation to take a hit.?

Further, review sites are notoriously easy to infiltrate, and some people exploit their anonymous nature to purposely damage a competitors? reputation. With smart phones and other mobile devices, an increasing number of people are using the Internet to find businesses and services nearby; a bad reputation can cost a company or individual many customers and lost sales.

What can be done about about damaging online information??

There are a variety of tactics that can be used to remove or mitigate the damage of negative online information. It may be possible to remove some damaging information. Laws exist to provide at least some protection against those making spurious claims, and professional reputation management companies often have legal teams that can persuade website operators to remove this information.?

For information that cannot be removed, it may be possible to drown the negative information in a sea of more positive information. You can take the cue of lawyer Morgan Chu and his wife, who donated $2.5 million to a graduate school for biological sciences. Gestures like this are seen as community building and can be just as powerful as traditional marketing. Philanthropy is one of the best forms of marketing on Earth.

Companies can also run promotional offers to encourage happy customers to leave positive feedback on public websites. Further, search engine optimization and other search engine strategies can be used to make the negative information harder to find.

How can I accomplish all of that??

Removing negative information and replacing it with more positive information can be a challenge. Legal knowledge, web development skill and search engine expertise are required to start the process, and a significant amount of effort is needed to execute the plan.?

Companies will also want to avoid certain actions that can lead to the creation of even more negative information or result in search engines delisting positive information. For individuals and companies, the best option is to hire professional help. Because of their knowledge and experience, these reputation management companies can deliver strong results in as quick a time frame as possible.?

Their speed and specialized tools help reduce the cost, and most who have negative information online will earn far more after having their reputation restored than the service costs.

The effects of the Internet are often both positive and negative. While the Internet allows companies and individuals to share information with the world, it also allows unhappy customers or competitors to drive potential customers away. Fortunately, there are affordable steps to that can be taken to ensure that positive information is easier to find than negative information.

How Long Does it Take to Cook a Turkey With the Most Powerful Flashlights in the World?

Wicked Lasers' $200 torch beams out 4100 lumens of blinding light. That's very intense light! From the video above, it would appear six of the flashlights can cook a whole turkey in about 2.5 hours. Considering a turkey takes 20-minutes a pound in the oven, that's incredible! In fact, it's actually kind of unbelievable, so we reached out to the laser people to double check that this is correct. Nexus 7 shipments for 2012 expected to top 5 million

Nexus 7

We heard straight from ASUS itself that shipments of the Nexus 7 were approaching 1 million for the month of October, and now we're hearing more information about shipments for the whole of 2012. According to DigiTimes, suppliers report that ASUS will be shipping upwards of 5 million units total for 2012. That's quite a feat for a device that launched in just July of this year.

The report explains that many manufacturers peak their manufacturing in October and November for the big holiday sales, but that ASUS intends to keep shipments strong all the way through the end of the year. The new, lower price levels for the Wifi models and inclusion of a new HSPA+ model are surely helping out sales this quarter, and we'll be interested to see what the final numbers are at the end of the year.

Army abuses a setback for Ivorian reconciliation: Human Rights Watch

ABIDJAN (Reuters) - Hundreds of civilians suspected of backing Ivory Coast's former president have been swept up in mass arrests and abused by the army, dealing a major setback to efforts to heal divisions after a decade of crisis, Human Rights Watch said on Monday.

Years of political deadlock in Ivory Coast ended in a brief post-election civil war last year, caused by President Laurent Gbagbo's refusal to accept his defeat at the polls.

Gbagbo is now in The Hague charged with crimes against humanity. But a wave of raids on security installations, beginning in August and blamed on his exiled supporters, has revived the spectre of violence and provoked a heavy-handed response from the army.

"At a time when the country remains deeply divided along political and ethnic lines, the military's actions pose a dangerous risk in terms of further alienating Gbagbo supporters," Human Rights Watch said in a report.

The government of President Alassane Ouattara, who won a run-off against Gbagbo, rejected the accusation of mass arrests.

"It was on the basis of a body of evidence and often after denunciation that these people were arrested as part of an investigation," Gnenema Coulibaly, Ivory Coast's minister of human rights, said in a written response to the report.

The investigation by Human Rights Watch documented systematic mass round-ups in restaurants, at bus stops and in private homes of young men from ethnic groups perceived to support Gbagbo.

Detainees were often beaten, robbed, held in overcrowded cells in illegal detention facilities, given little to eat or drink, and deprived of contact with their families, the report said.

Ivory Coast's government has promised to investigate and prosecute anyone responsible for such abuses, but Human Rights Watch said it had made little effort to do so.

"In resorting to tactics that violate the rights of detainees, Ivorian security forces may be fuelling the ethnic and political divisions that are at the root of these attacks," the report said.

One civilian victim of abuse interviewed by the rights group said he had not been involved in the war or the recent violence. He said he did not know what he would do now if asked to take up arms and fight against the army.

"When people have been stripped of everything, when all we are left with is hatred ... we're a long way from reconciliation," he said.

Mini bio-bot walks when its rat heart cells beat

8 hrs.

With the aid of a 3-D printer, researchers have fashioned soft, quarter-inch-long biological robots out of gel-like material and rat heart cells. When the cells beat, the bio-bots take a step.

The robots resemble tiny springboards, each with one long, thin leg resting on a stout supporting leg. The thin leg is covered in the heart cells. When the cells beat, the long leg pulses, propelling the bio-bot forward, according to?the research team from the?University of Illinois.

The main body of the bio-bot consists of hydrogel, a soft gelatin-like polymer, and is built with a 3-D printer. The use of the printer allowed the researchers to rapidly explore various designs in search of one that worked.?

This gel is then coated with rat heart cells. ?After a few days, the cells synchronize and beat spontaneously,? Rashid Bashir, a professor of electrical, computer, and biological engineering who led the research team, explained to NBC News in an email.

Potential uses of the bio-bots include drug testing, since how the bots move can indicate their response to certain chemicals. Integration of cells that respond to specific chemicals could allow the bio-bots to be used as sensors.

The robots bring to mind the artificial jellyfish created earlier this year that too is powered by the beating of rat heart cells. That creation was lauded as a step towards the creation of an artificial heart with living cells.

Going forward,?Bashir?s team aims to enhance the control and function of their bio-bots with, for example, neurons to direct motion or cells that respond to light. They are also working on robots of various shapes and configurations to accomplish different tasks, such as climbing stairs.

?We are just beginning to scratch the surface,? Vincent Chan, a graduate student and lead author of a paper describing the bio-bots published Nov. 15 in Scientific Reports,?said in a news release.

A video of the bio-bot in motion is available here.?

Using The Stock Market Wisely: Tips And Advice For New Investors ...

Even the most knowledgeable investors find the stock market really tricky and challenging. Although you have potential of making some money, you could experience misfortunes that set you back. Investing your money wisely will be easy thanks to the advice you?ve read here, so get started today!

Don?t over invest in the stock of the company you work for. It is okay to have a little of your company?s stock in your portfolio, however, it should not be the majority of your portfolio. Investing primarily in your own company is risky because if it falters, you may lose a great deal of money.

TIP! When you decide upon a stock to invest in, only invest five to ten percent of your total capital fund into that one choice. If your stock rapidly declines later, this can help decrease your exposed risk.

Damaged stocks can work, but not damaged companies. When a stock has a temporary drop in price it is a great time to buy, but it is also important to be certain that the decline is really temporary. A businesses that simply misses some deadline due to some error, like shortage of materials, can experience sudden drops in the value of their stock due to investors who panic. Note that this is temporary, not permanent. If the company?s stock dropped in value because of dishonesty, greed or scandal, however, the stock might never recover.

A simple investment plan is the best bet for a beginner. It can be tempting to diversify right away and try everything you have read about or learned, but if you are new at investing it is best to find one thing that works and stick with that. Although you may not make a ton of money with your simple plan, you don?t risk the substantial losses that can come with inexperienced complicated investing.

When buying a stock, you should maintain a stopping point. As soon as your stocks reach that point, you should get rid of them to avoid to compounding your loses. However, if you have a good reason to believe this investment will gain value again, you should keep them. Yet, to avoid losing your money, then selling is your best option.

TIP! Keep in mind that there is a lot more to a stock than an abstract asset that you can buy and sell. Owning a stock makes you part of the body that owns the company which issued it.

If you are seeking diversity in your investment portfolio, remember that it?s not just about varying sectors, but many factors that comprise strategic diversification. Additionally, you do not need to fit every strategy or factor into your portfolio investment strategy. However, it helps if you can create a group of stocks that represent different sectors, using many other selection criteria as you are comfortable with.

Consult with an expert before deciding to trade stocks on your own. A good professional wont just give you great individual stock picks. They can help you clarify important strategic investment points, such as your overall goals, your preferred time line, and your tolerance for risk. You can both then develop a customized plan that will help you to achieve your goals.

If your start in the stock market is not a strong one, do not get discouraged. Many beginners get discouraged when something doesn?t happen the way they hoped or thought. To become a successful investor requires patience, experience, and a deep understanding of the market, and it takes time to develop these traits.

Investing in stocks requires you stick to one easy principle: keep it simple! Keep all your investment activities simple so that you don?t take unnecessary risks in the market.

Rather than locking all of your money up in a few high-priced stocks, consider investing in a larger group of more affordable ones. Buying less expensive stocks will make it less of a burden to sell when the time is right and easier to manage too. Also, you will not experience the same stress as you do with a small number of expensive stocks.

There are many choices you can make that will affect how successful you are in trading stocks. Use this advice to make safer and more successful stock market investments.

Many on NY's Long Island still dark after Sandy

HICKSVILLE, N.Y. (AP) ? More than 70,000 customers of Long Island Power Authority in New York were without electricity Monday, two weeks after Superstorm Sandy struck, and the often-criticized government entity mostly blamed factors beyond its control.

LIPA had restored power to nearly 1.1 million customers by Monday morning. Of those still in the dark, 46,300 mainly along Long Island's south shore and Rockaway Peninsula had water damage to electrical panels and wiring and their service can't be restored without an inspection and possibly repairs.

State officials have criticized the utility for poor customer communications after Tropical Storm Irene last year and for insufficient tree trimming maintenance. LIPA, a nonprofit whose board is chosen by the governor and lawmakers, contracts with National Grid for service and maintenance.

The lack of power restoration for a relative few in the densely populated region at the heart of the storm reinforced Sandy's fractured effect on the area: tragic and vicious to some, merely a nuisance to others.

Perhaps none of the utilities have drawn criticism as widespread, or as harsh, as LIPA.

"We certainly understand the frustration that's out there," LIPA's chief operating officer, Michael Hervey, said in a conference call late Sunday. But, he said, the storm had been worse than expected, no utility had as many workers in place beforehand as it would have liked, and the power was coming back rapidly "compared to the damage that's been incurred."

LIPA has said it knows that customers aren't getting the information they need, partly because of an outdated information technology system that it is updating.

"I was so disgusted the other night," said Carrie Baram, 56, of Baldwin Harbor, who said she calls the utility three times a day. "I was up till midnight, but nobody bothered to answer the telephone."

Executives said Sunday that they were working on setting up information centers near the most heavily damaged areas. The company also said it had deployed 6,400 linemen to work on restoring power, compared to 200 on a normal day.

"'They're working on it, they're working on it' ? that would be their common response," Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano said, describing LIPA's interaction with his office.

He said LIPA had failed to answer even simple questions from its customers and that Sandy's magnitude wasn't an excuse.

Cleanup continues in New York and New Jersey, which bore the brunt of the destruction. At its peak, the storm knocked out power to 8.5 million in 10 states, and some during a later nor'easter. About 73,000 utility customers in New York and New Jersey remained without power late Sunday, most of them on Long Island.

On hard-hit Staten Island, U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano visited with disaster-relief workers Sunday in the Midland Beach neighborhood, which is still devastated two weeks after Sandy hit.

Napolitano said "a lot of progress" had been made since the storm hit and especially since her last visit 10 days earlier.

"It seems like a different place," she said. "You can really tell the difference."

But, she added, there was a lot more to do. "The last big chunk" to solve, she said, is the question of how quickly power can be returned to thousands of homes without it.

If homes are not inhabitable even after power returns, she said, the government is finding temporary apartments and hotels where evacuees can stay ? preferably in the same community so kids can continue going to the same schools.
