Ford Deserves A $12 Stock Price On Strong U.S. Sales

Disclosure: No positions.

Vehicles sales for Ford Motors (F) rose 13% helped by strong performances by F-series pick up trucks and Escape SUV, which were up 19% and 37% respectively. Sales for August highlight how Ford?s North American operations continue to remain solid. Overall, sales for the first eight months of the year are up 6% for the automaker. Ford?s sales growth in 2012 has trailed the overall auto sales growth but this was expected as the Japanese automakers recover from their previous year lows. Vehicle sales in 2011 were negatively affected by production and supply chain constraints caused by the tragic tsunami. Ford will now increase the production by 7% in the fourth quarter to meet the rise in demand.

See full analysis for Ford Motors

Focusing on fuel efficient cars has been one of the main reasons why the automaker continues to do well in the U.S. In fact, by the end of the year, Ford will have eight cars in its portfolio with mileage in excess of 40 mpg. In total, Ford will invest $16 billion in its U.S. operations, including $6.2 billion in U.S. plants, to design, engineer and produce new and upgraded vehicles and components by 2015.

Strong performance by the auto companies in 2012 means the total light vehicles sales in the U.S. are expected to reach 14.5 million vehicles; upping the company?s previous forecast of 13.5-14 million vehicles.

Meanwhile, in Europe

The stock is down almost 30% in the last six months as uncertainty looms over its European operations. Fords operating loss in Europe swelled to $403 million in Q2 and the company expects the total operating losses in Europe to top $1 billion for 2012. Ford and other automakers face overcapacity issues but the stringent labor unions have not allowed car makers to shut down plants or lay off jobs. But there have been recent reports that governments might now be open to the idea of job cuts and plant closures as the auto industry continues to bleed red. It might be better to cut a few jobs rather than letting the whole industry die, the governments feel.Ford plans to tackle its European woes by introducing 20 new models in the region by 2014 including new versions of Mondeo, Fiesta and Kuga.

We have a $12 price estimate for Ford, which is about 30% higher than the current market price.

Realty One Group expands into franchising | Key Realty, Inc

Growing?Las Vegas area-based brokerage?Realty One Group Inc.?is adding a franchise wing to its operation with an eye on expanding nationwide and eventually going public. The company is the country?s 11th-largest brokerage when ranked by completed transaction sides in 2011, according to?Real Trends, and expects to add 100 franchisees along the California coast in the next year, with the first by the end of the month.

The franchise move comes on the heels of the company?s rocket-like growth in the last few years. Real Trends ranked Realty One Group No. 1 on its list of top five-year (2007-2011) brokerage movers based on transaction volume increase (12,475) this year. Last year, the brokerage completed 15,475 transaction sides worth more than $2.6 billion in sales volume.

Realty One Group was founded in 2005 and now comprises 4,000 agents in 15 offices in Arizona, Nevada and California. In May, the company?acquired?the 40-agent Southern California brokerage eVantage Home Realty. Last year,?it acquired?one of Arizona?s largest brokerages, Phoenix-based John Hall & Associates.

The company?s franchise model will be as unconventional as its brokerage one, said Kuba Jewgieniew, CEO and founder of Realty One Group. The brokerage has a two-tiered fee structure for agents: a flat fee of $375, regardless of a transaction?s amount, for more experienced agents; and a 70/30 commission split for agents who choose to be mentored by the brokerage.

The franchise fee structure will be similar, Jewgieniew said: Instead of paying royalties or annual fees, all agents will pay a flat monthly fee of $100 (of which the franchisee keeps $75) and a per-transaction fee of $200 (of which the franchisee keeps $150).

The company will keep growing the brokerage side of its business along with the franchise system, he said.

Franchise operations for the company will be headed by franchise veteran Rick Hudson, who served five years (from 2003 to 2008) as senior director of franchise management with the franchise-owning real estate giant Realogy.

?We think we have something special,? Jewgieniew said. ?We have a proven business model.? The company has a stringent evaluation process for bringing on agents, which will continue for franchisees, he said.

In a 2010?Las?Vegas Sun interview, Jewgieniew, a former stockbroker and computer programmer,?said,??What I am trying to create is the new standard in how a brokerage should be run.??That new standard includes a focus on technology and in-house software development, he said. Realty One Group has developed and operates its own management and transaction software, he said.

The company has been profitable since its fourth month, Jewgieniew said. His focus on growing in a quality-focused manner, the fact that he?s the sole owner and that the company?s debt-free, gives him optimism about the success of the nationwide expansion.

?We?ve had explosive growth,? Jewgieniew said, ?and we?re at a tipping point.? He expects the company will go public sometime next year.

7 American troops die in Afghan helicopter crash

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) ? Seven American troops and four Afghans died in a Black Hawk helicopter crash on Thursday in southern Afghanistan, the NATO military coalition said. The Taliban claimed their fighters shot down the aircraft.

The crash marked another deadly day for the U.S. in Afghanistan, less than a week after six American service members were gunned down, apparently by two members of the Afghan security forces they were training to take over the fight against the insurgency as international combat troops prepare to exit the country by the end of 2014.

The spike in American deaths and attacks by Afghan allies have stirred fresh doubts about the prospects for the U.S. plan to leave a capable Afghan government in place when most troops depart after more than a decade of war.

Spokesman Brig. Gen Gunter Katz said the NATO coalition is investigating the cause of Thursday's crash in Kandahar province. The coalition had no immediate comment on the insurgents' claim that they shot down the helicopter.

Kandahar is a traditional Taliban stronghold and the spiritual birthplace of the hardline Islamist movement that ruled Afghanistan before being ousted in 2001 by the U.S.-led alliance for sheltering al-Qaida's terrorist leaders.

Among the dead were seven American service members, three members of Afghan security forces and one Afghan civilian interpreter, said Jamie Graybeal, a spokesman for the coalition. He said there were no survivors of the crash.

He declined to give any details on the mission of the helicopter, a UH-60 Black Hawk.

Taliban spokesman Qari Yousef Ahmadi said insurgent fighters shot down the helicopter in Kandahar province on Thursday morning.

"Nobody survived this," Ahmadi told The Associated Press by phone.

The helicopter was shot down in Kandahar's Shah Wali Kot district, which lies in the northern part of the province, said Ahmad Jawed Faisal, a spokesman for the provincial government said. He declined to give further details.

The area where the helicopter went down ? a stretch of Kandahar along the border with Uruzgan province ? is seen as a Taliban stronghold and key transit route. The insurgents regularly attack police checkpoints around the rural villages of the district and plant bombs in the road to catch passing government vehicles.

The Sikorsky UH-60 Black Hawk is a medium-lift helicopter that has served as the U.S. Army's workhorse since the 1980s.

The U.S.-led NATO force in Afghanistan has relied heavily on utility helicopters such as the Black Hawk to ferry troops, dignitaries and supplies around the mountainous terrain, thus avoiding the threat of ambushes and roadside bombs.

Thursday's crash is the deadliest since a Turkish helicopter crashed into a house near the Afghan capital, Kabul, on March 16, killing 12 Turkish soldiers on board and four Afghan civilians on the ground, officials said.

In August last year, insurgents shot down a Chinook helicopter, killing 30 American troops, mostly elite Navy SEALs, in Afghanistan's central Wardak province.

At least 221 American service members have been killed in Afghanistan so far this year.

Sharks can get worry-free sun tans

Even sharks can get a tan. Sharks' skin turns from dark brown to black as the pigment melanin increases in direct response to radiation. In other fish, the exposure can lead to skin cancer. Sharks, however, just seem to tan.

What's their secret? The answer could hold the key to preventing skin disease in humans.

"As far as I'm aware, sharks appear very robust to skin damage and disease," said Michael Sweet, lead author of a study about shark tanning in the journal PLoS ONE. "There have been a lot of attempts to induce melanomas in sharks to no affect."

NEWS: Shark Paradise Found

"I don't know what makes shark skin so special, but it definitely needs to be studied," added Sweet, a researcher in the School of Biology at Newcastle University's Newcastle Institute for Research on Sustainability.

  1. Science news from NBCNews.com

    1. Simulator may show Earth's future

Swiss researchers are planning an incredibly ambitious computer system that will attempt to simulate as much of the planet and its activity as possible, from weather to the economy ? and perhaps even predict the future. They call it the Living Earth Simulator.

    2. Trawler turns up weird deep-sea sharks
    3. Sharks can get worry-free sun tans
    4. Obits reflect rise of celebrity culture

Sweet and his team report on extensive melanoma in wild populations of the commercially important marine fish, coral trout. The scientists believe that the likely cause is environmental exposure to UV radiation. Climate change, which many studies tie to pollution and other human-driven factors, could be escalating incidence of the disease. Relatively high prevalence of skin cancer in fish, for example, has been recently reported at sites in the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park.

Sharks, on the other hand, simply change color.

In a separate study, Christopher Lowe, who runs the CSULB Sharklab at California State University Long Beach, and Gwen Goodmanlowe noticed the color shift in juvenile scalloped hammerhead sharks located in Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii. The sharks normally spend most of their time near the bottom of the bay, but when they were held in a shallow seawater pond with more sunlight exposure, their skin turned from light tan in color to a dark brown/black. Ultraviolet light intensity was 600 times greater than usual.

SHARK WEEK: Don?t Miss the 25th Anniversary of Shark Week

To determine if the sharks were actually sun tanning, the researchers exposed the sharks to irradiance treatments using filters attached to the sharks' pectoral fins. The scientists saw changes in melanin densities, but did not detect visible lesions or growths associated with skin cancer.

"It is possible that sun tanning is used when the shark pups leave the bay and enter the clear pelagic waters they occupy as adults," the researchers speculated.

Certain shark species might then also be able to tan, depending on their particular habitat and environmental needs. It remains unclear, though, how disturbances related to human activities could impact the natural process.

"I believe many other fish species will be suffering from cancers, and the more we look, the more we shall see," Sweet said. "Already, a few researchers have been sending me photos of other species that may be infected similar to those in my study."

He continued, "We need to do further work to confirm the UV link, and if this comes true, then I'm sure human activities are having a direct effect on these fish. As I'm sure you are aware, climate change has dramatically affected many ecosystems and many, many organisms."

In the meantime, other scientific teams continue to investigate why shark skin is so sturdy. In a study accepted for publication later this year in Food Chemistry, Phanat Kittiphattanabawon of Songkla University and colleagues analyzed blacktip sharks.

Kittiphattanabawon's group determined that antioxidant properties of the shark's skin were tremendous, such that it even inhibited cooked pork fat from turning rancid. Blacktip sharks are listed as near threatened by the International Union for Conservation of Nature. Many other shark species are also in jeopardy.

The hope is that the biochemical secrets of shark skin can be unlocked so that the beneficial properties can be replicated to help humans without involving killing sharks.

Porter out, Lindeblad in at state Health Care Authority - The Olympian

Doug Porter is leaving the state Health Care Authority to take a job in the private sector, and Gov. Chris Gregoire today named MaryAnne Lindeblad to replace him at the helm of the agency with the second-largest budget in state government.

Porter leaves Aug. 17. He said in a letter to staff that a health care consulting firm is in the "final stages" of hiring him.

Lindeblad is an administrator at the Department of Social and Health Services, where she leads the Aging and Disability Services Administration, overseeing aid to the elderly, developmentally disabled and mentally ill, including Western State Hospital, whose top job is also about to be vacant.

The Health Care Authority handles more than $5 billion a year in Medicaid, state employee health benefits and other medical spending, a close second to DSHS in terms of money.

Porter's letter is below, and he says in his tenure the agency boosted enrollment in the state childrens' health insurance program, Apple Health for Kids; made efforts to redesign health care purchasing, target waste and tamp down medical inflation; and started implementing federal health care reform.

Here's Gregoire's news release:

Gov. Gregoire appoints MaryAnne Lindeblad as director of the Washington State Health Care Authority

OLYMPIA -- Gov. Chris Gregoire today announced the appointment of MaryAnne Lindeblad as director of the Washington State Health Care Authority. Lindeblad, who is currently the assistant secretary of the Aging and Disability Services Administration at the Department of Social and Health Services, succeeds outgoing director Doug Porter.

?MaryAnne has the unique skill and experience necessary to walk into this role seamlessly, and continue the tremendous success of this agency,? Gregoire said. ?She brings an impressive background, including leading one of the largest divisions at DSHS, even larger than the Health Care Authority. Her career has focused on safeguarding the integrity of the health care system and Medicaid, while ensuring that the citizens of Washington state are protected and provided with the best service possible. I welcome MaryAnne to this role, and am confident she will continue to serve Washingtonians well.?

?I?ve spent my career focused on improving our health care systems, and look forward to serving Washingtonians in this new role,? Lindeblad said. ?This position no doubt brings new challenges, including the expansion of Medicaid over the next few years. I am committed to bringing the same heart and passion that I?ve always shown, and ensuring Washingtonians continue to have access to the quality and affordable health care they deserve.?

Lindeblad has spent much of her career at DSHS, serving in a variety of leadership positions. Prior to her current role, Lindeblad served as director of the Division of Health Care Services in the former Health and Recovery Services Administration at DSHS. She has also served as director of the Division of Healthcare Services for the Medicaid Purchasing Administration, and as assistant administrator of the Public Employees Benefits Board for the Washington Health Care Authority. Lindeblad also has experience as the director of operations for Unified Physicians of Washington.

As an active member of the healthcare community, Lindeblad currently serves as chair of the Medicaid Managed Care Technical Advisory Group, is a member of the executive committee for the National Academy for State Health Policy, and chairs their Long Term and Chronic Care subcommittee. She currently chairs the board of the Olympia Free? Clinic, a position she has held since 2010.

Lindeblad holds a bachelor of science in nursing from Eastern Washington University and a master?s in public health from the University of Washington.

In 2010, Gregoire announced her intent to merge the existing Health Care Authority and Medicaid, putting the director also in charge of the state's other large health care purchasing program, the Public Employees Benefits Board. These transitions helped streamline and standardize state healthcare programs as well as bend the health cost curve, helping restrain annual medical cost inflation to less than four percent by eliminating waste and inefficiencies.

Gregoire said Porter's experience and leadership would be missed.

?Health care has been a priority concern of my administration from the beginning, and many significant improvements ? Apple Health for Kids, the move to evidence-based medicine, and the state's leadership in health care reform ? would not have been possible without the support of the Medicaid program and Director Doug Porter,? said Gregoire.

?Doug?s stewardship and prioritization of health care initiatives and reform at the helm of the Washington state Health Care Authority for the past decade have improved lives and provided a more healthy future for Washingtonians,? said Gregoire. ?I thank him for his commitment and service.?

Porter's letter:

TO: Health Care Authority Staff

FROM: Doug Porter, director

SUBJECT: Transition

Today, it is with a poignant mixture of happiness and regret that I am submitting to the Governor my letter of resignation as Director of the Health Care Authority. My last day in the office will be Friday, August I7, after which I will be taking advantage of several weeks of accumulated annual leave.

I have thoroughly enjoyed my ten-year assignment as head of the Washington State Medicaid program and. for the past two years, Director of the Health Care Authority. It is truly one of the very best jobs in state government. As I look back over all the positions I've held in both public and private sectors, I can honestly say that have never worked with a more talented or committed crew of professionals. It is this I will miss most - the sense of teamwork and drive for excellence that you bring to our programs and customers again and again.

I am in the final stages of securing a position with a health care consulting firm with a sterling national reputation, the outcome of which I will share in the very near future. My immediate plans are for Susan and myself to take what's left of our summer to spend time with our first grandchild, Ella, and to travel to parts of the state that, somehow, we have been too busy to see over the past decade.

While it is hard to leave, I am comforted by the knowledge that a program as complex and vital as ours is being entrusted to a group of executives, managers, and line workers who are absolutely capable of carrying out its goals. You have risen to daunting challenges in the past, and know you are already turning your considerable energies to a brighter future offered by national health care reform. I want all of you to take a moment and share credit in the successes of the past decade (now would be a good time to share with stakeholders our recently published agency report). Many of these achievements were possible in large part because we have enjoyed a Governor and a Legislature who were as committed as we were to improving health care and the services we provide to employees, their dependents, retirees, and for our state's most vulnerable populations. The full list would rapidly overtake this announcement, but some major items include the commitment we made to evidence-based medicine; our drive to strategically redesign the state's health care purchasing; our full-court press for enrollment in Apple Health for Kids; taking on the Governor's challenge to restrain annual medical cost inflation to four-percent or less, by eliminating waste and inefficiencies; and the preparations we've made - and are still making - for health care reform. Our claims payment system - ProviderOne, set a new national standard for Medicaid Management Information Systems, and our Program Integrity innovations have inspired flattering imitations in other states.

It has been my extreme pleasure and deep honor to enjoy this ride with you. I wish all of you continued success in the years ahead, and I hope that our paths may cross again soon.

Thank you for your dedication to our mission and your solid support over the years.

Israel kills Palestinian at West Bank checkpoint: medics

RAMALLAH, West Bank (Reuters) - Israeli troops opened fire at a Palestinian car at a checkpoint in the occupied West Bank early on Monday, killing one person and wounding two others, Palestinian officials said.

It was unclear why the Israelis fired at the car as it approached the checkpoint on a road connecting West Bank cities and Jerusalem before dawn.

According to Palestinian medical workers, the man in his 40s who was shot dead and the two others were traveling to pray in Jerusalem.

A spokesman for Israel's border police, which is stationed at checkpoints in the area, could not be reached for immediate comment.

Israel captured the West Bank and East Jerusalem, land the Palestinians want for a future state, during a 1967 Middle East War in a move that has not won international recognition.
