Thu, 17 Jan 2013 06:03:17 -0800 Facebook Blows Up the Server Industry with New Open Source Hardware http://moelerugo.posterous.com/facebook-blows-up-the-server-industry-with-ne http://moelerugo.posterous.com/facebook-blows-up-the-server-industry-with-ne It may seem a bit strange, but Facebook has some serious hardware chops these days. It started with the open hardware server designs, but this year the company is doing one better and unveiling a new standard server design that should allow for much more modular servers and racks.

First and foremost, Facebook designed a new universal processor slot, there hasn't been one in decades. The really surprising thing is that the industry is behind it, Intel, AMD and a couple of ARM processor makers are involved.

Technically, it's not a processor slot but a system-on-a-chip one, based on the PCI-E standard.

This should enable companies to use any processor, from any vendor, with their motherboards. In fact, they can even mix and match them, put Intel processors alongside AMD ones, or, perhaps a better choice, alongside ARM-based ones.

Facebook has been working on this for a few years, but this is the biggest move yet. It even spun-off Open Compute as an independent non-profit which will continue working on interoperable standards and open hardware designs.

It may seem strange that Facebook, a software company, is the force behind it, but it makes sense, Facebook is not competing with any of the companies that got involved, it's one of their biggest customer in fact.

And, while Intel may hate working with AMD and Dell doesn't like the idea of servers built to open specs, they'd hate to lose Facebook and other companies like it even more.

It's a real threat too, started by Google. The company has been making its own servers for years and now runs completely custom hardware. It designs the servers, the enclosures, even the networking gear and hands off production to cheap China factories.

Facebook is running custom hardware as well. Smaller companies can't afford to do it yet, but the server industry doesn't want to wait until they do.

Google though keeps its hardware designs very close to its vest, while it touts openness when it comes to software and data, it's more secretive than Apple when it comes to hardware. Facebook is pretty much the other way around, it guards its data, but it open sources its hardware design.

In fact, the threat of a high-quality server blueprint that can be built by cheap manufacturers is what got the existing vendors all behind the Open Compute initiative.

It's still early days. During the Open Compute Summit IV, which is now underway, Facebook will unveil the new motherboard slot, dubbed the "Group Hug."

Intel is unveiling a new 100 Gbps chip that's designed to link up multiple servers on the same rack and in the same data center at speeds that make it possible to separate processors from memory, for example, and not create a bottleneck.

Facebook has also unveiled two new open source server designs, a web server like the ones it uses to run the site, and a new database server that relies entirely on flash-storage. This one is designed to go with a new 3.2 TB flash card, designed by Fusion-io, also being unveiled at the Open Compute Summit.

Overall, Facebook is breathing fresh air into the industry. It should result in lower cost for companies and more efficient computing which benefit users, customers, the companies themselves and even the hardware makers, in the end.

Thu, 17 Jan 2013 04:17:21 -0800 Neon lights up exploding stars http://moelerugo.posterous.com/neon-lights-up-exploding-stars http://moelerugo.posterous.com/neon-lights-up-exploding-stars Wednesday, January 16, 2013

An international team of nuclear astrophysicists has shed new light on the explosive stellar events known as novae.

These dramatic explosions are driven by nuclear processes and make previously unseen stars visible for a short time. The team of scientists measured the nuclear structure of the radioactive neon produced through this process in unprecedented detail.

Their findings, reported in the US journal Physical Review Letters, show there is much less uncertainty in how quickly one of the key nuclear reactions will occur as well as in the final abundance of radioactive isotopes than has previously been suggested.

Led by the University of York, UK, and Universitat Polit?cnica de Catalunya and the Institut d'Estudis Espacials de Catalunya, Spain, the findings will help with the interpretation of future data from gamma ray observing satellites.

While large stars end their lives with spectacular explosions called supernovae, smaller stars, known as white dwarf stars, sometimes experience smaller, but still dramatic explosions called novae. The brightest nova explosions are visible to the naked eye.

A nova occurs when a white dwarf is close enough to a companion star to drag matter ? mostly hydrogen and helium ? from the outer layers of that star onto itself, building up an envelope. When enough material has accumulated on the surface, a burst of nuclear fusion occurs, causing the white dwarf to brighten and expel the remaining material. Within a few days to months, the glow subsides. The phenomenon is expected to recur after typically 10,000 to 100,000 years.

Traditionally novae are observed in the visible and nearby wavelengths, but this emission only shows up about a week after the explosion and therefore only gives partial information on the event.

Dr Alison Laird, from the University of York's Department of Physics, said: "The explosion is fundamentally driven by nuclear processes. The radiation related to the decay of isotopes - in particular that from an isotope of fluorine - is actively being sought by current and future gamma ray observing satellite missions as it provides direct insight into the explosion.

"However, to be interpreted correctly, the nuclear reaction rates involved in the production of the fluorine isotope must be known. We have demonstrated that previous assumptions about key nuclear properties are incorrect and have improved our knowledge of the nuclear reaction pathway."

The experimental work was carried out at the Maier-Leibnitz Laboratory in Garching, Germany, and scientists from the University of Edinburgh played a key role in the interpretation of the data. The study also involved scientists from Canada and the United States.

Dr Anuj Parikh, from the Departament de Fisica i Enginyeria Nuclear at the Universitat Polit?cnica de Catalunya, said: "The observation of gamma-rays from novae would help to better determine exactly what chemical elements are synthesized in these astrophysical explosions. In this work, details required to calculate the production of the key radioactive fluorine isotope have been measured precisely. This will allow more detailed investigation of the processes and reactions behind the nova."

Tue, 15 Jan 2013 08:06:16 -0800 Golden Globes Recap: Best Moments and Winners http://moelerugo.posterous.com/golden-globes-recap-best-moments-and-winners http://moelerugo.posterous.com/golden-globes-recap-best-moments-and-winners

Several big moments brought attendees at the Golden Globes to their feet Sunday night.

Former U.S. President Bill Clinton strolled on stage for a surprise appearance -- making jaws drop -- to introduce the montage for presidential flick, Lincoln.

[More from Mashable: Listen to Coldplay if You Want to Stay Safe on the Road, Study Says]

"Wow, what an exciting special guest ... That was Hillary Clinton's husband," co-host Amy Poehler, alongside Tina Fey, jokingly said after Clinton's appearance.

Ben Affleck, who was left off the Best Director nominees list for the Oscars, took home top honors for Best Director. He and his Argo comrades also won for Best Drama.

[More from Mashable: And the Golden Globe Goes to ? GIFs!]

Meanwhile, some celebrities referenced viral web entities. Hollywood Foreign Press Association President Aida Takla-O'Reilly channeled her inner Carly Rae Jepsen by saying, "Allow me to say three little words to Bradley Cooper: Call me maybe?" And during Jodie Foster's head-scratching speech for her Lifetime Achievement Award, the actress quipped, "I'm not Honey Boo Boo Child."

On Twitter, people sent 3.6 million tweets during the red carpet and broadcast, pushing the total in 24 hours to 4.2 million. These were the most-tweeted moments: 1) Jennifer Lawrence wins Best Actress (comedy or musical) for Silver Linings Playbook with 19,886 tweets per minute; 2) Anne Hathaway wins Best Supporting Actress (comedy or musical) for Les Miserables with 19,695 TPM; and 3) Clinton introduces Lincoln with 18,290 TPM.

The televised 70th Golden Globe Awards experienced several technical glitches, too. Salma Hayek and Paul Rudd fell victim to a teleprompter malfunction, preventing them from properly introducing the Best TV Drama Series nominees, while the sound cut out multiple times during Foster's speech.

Tue, 15 Jan 2013 04:35:16 -0800 Vice President Joe Biden Meets With Gaming Industry - Giant Bomb http://moelerugo.posterous.com/vice-president-joe-biden-meets-with-gaming-in http://moelerugo.posterous.com/vice-president-joe-biden-meets-with-gaming-in

In the wake of the tragic shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary, where 20 children were shot and killed, Vice President Joe Biden met with representatives from the video game industry last Friday.

Part of that meeting with Biden was recorded, as well, and I?ve embedded it below.

"We know this is a complex problem," said Biden. "We know there's no single answer, and quite frankly we don't even know whether some of the things people think impact on this impact on it or not. So I want you to know you have not been singled out for help.?

Biden is expected to brief President Obama sometime today with recommendations for how the Administration can respond to the outcry over our nation?s most recent encounter with gun violence on a massive scale.

Reuters reports representatives in attendance were from Activision Blizzard, Electronic Arts, E-Line Media, Entertainment Software Association, Entertainment Software Ratings Board, Epic Games, GameStop, Sesame Workshop, Take-Two Interactive, Texas A&M University, University of Wisconsin at Madison, and Zenimax Media.

Additionally, the National Rifle Association, which partially blamed video games for the incident at Sandy Hook, released an app set in the first-person for iOS platforms today called NRA: Practice Range. It's available to download for free for anyone ages four and up. Weird? Weird.

Thu, 10 Jan 2013 07:16:20 -0800 Tips To Get Auto Insurance At The Lowest Price | Complete Auto ... http://moelerugo.posterous.com/tips-to-get-auto-insurance-at-the-lowest-pric http://moelerugo.posterous.com/tips-to-get-auto-insurance-at-the-lowest-pric

Car insurance is not designed solely to protect your vehicle. It also protects your health and finances, as well as protecting other drivers and their vehicles. As soon as you receive your auto insurance policy, double check to make sure you are covered for everything you expect to be. Using the tips in this article, you can get the most out of your insurance policy.

When looking at auto insurance, be sure you comprehend the laws of your place of residence. All states vary in the amount of minimum coverage they provide. Therefore, it is vital that you know what the requirements are before you buy a policy.

TIP! It?s important to sit down and figure out how much auto insurance coverage you truly need. You probably don?t need every insurance coverage option.

When it comes to teenagers and cars, you are going to be best off by letting them share a car that you already own as opposed to buying them their own cars when it comes to insurance rates. A better alternative is to have them drive one of your existing vehicles. This saves you money on insurance because you can just add them to your existing policy. Not only that, but with many insurance companies offering discounts to good students, they may qualify for a reduced rate on their policy.

    Safety Features

Make your agent aware of all your car?s safety features to get the best rate possible. Theft prevention devices such as alarms, and safety features such as airbags, can not only lower your rate, but also save you money on future claims. This holds true as well if you place these things on an old car.

TIP! Keep a detailed record of all the insurance bills that you have paid. Not only do you need it to carry in your car for proof that you do have insurance, it could also come in handy if there is ever a dispute with your insurance coverage regarding premiums being paid.

When you?re in the market for car insurance, you will want to understand what protection the various coverage types will provide. Your insurance may only be for a single vehicle, but the cost will still be affected by many different variables. Liability and bodily injury insurance will cover legal costs, but you will need death and injury coverage if your car hits someone.

One way you can bring your car insurance costs down is to accept higher deductibles on your policy. Having a higher deductible on your insurance policy often results in lower premiums. However, keep in mind that when you have a high deductible, your out-of-pocket expense will be higher if you ever need to file an insurance claim.

Make sure to conduct research before agreeing on a warranty for your vehicle parts. Repair shops are generally required to have a guarantee period on any labor they do, and product makers also usually have these types of warranties in place as well. Money spent on an insurance option you will never use is money wasted.

    Insurance Rates

Car insurance rates vary by state, so consider what the rates are in the area you?re planning to move to. Often times, the state-by-state rates can depend on the likelihood of accident of theft. Most rural areas have lower insurance rates than big cities.

Having a tracker, alarm or immobilizer in your car can reduce the premium you pay for auto insurance. The more likely your car is to be stolen, the higher your insurance premium will be. Alternately, a secure car is far cheaper to insure.

Use these suggestions to look at your auto insurance policy. You may discover that you haven?t had adequate coverage, or that you are being overcharged.

Wed, 09 Jan 2013 08:06:17 -0800 Best Internet Business Ideas - 6 Ways to Get Traffic to Your Site Now http://moelerugo.posterous.com/best-internet-business-ideas-6-ways-to-get-tr http://moelerugo.posterous.com/best-internet-business-ideas-6-ways-to-get-tr

In previous posts?I?ve?expounded on the notion that getting customers to your site is where the ?rubber meets the road?. Even with the best internet business ? where you have painstakingly developed the perfect product and offer ? without any targeted visitors, you will simply not be making any sales.

In this post I?m going to discuss paid traffic sources. Specifically, 6 different ways where you can get targeted traffic to your website quickly so you can start making money online right away.

    1) Google Adwords ? This is probably the single best known paid advertising method. Also known as ?pay per click? advertising, you create an ad with a link to your website that appears next to search results for specific terms or keywords that you specify. Whole books have been written on how to use Adwords efficiently, but really the most important factors that determine the traffic you?ll see are your maximum CPC (cost per click) bid, click through rate (CTR) and your quality score as that drives where your ad will be seen. Better CPC and QTS scores drive optimal positioning of your ad in the search results.

    2) Bing Search Marketing ? Although Google is the undisputed search king, Bing still manages to serve about 16% of all search traffic. ?Although much lower than Google, it?s still worthwhile to check out their ad platform as there is typically less competition between marketers and lower ad costs as a result. ?Some marketing surveys also suggest that Bing search ad conversion rates might actually be higher than Google. This equates to more bang for the buck.

    3) Facebook Ads ? The power of Facebook is the ability to market your ad to an extremely targeted set of potential customers from an incredibly vast pool. ?(As of this writing Facebook boasts a base of 800 million active users.) ?Since Facebook has knowledge of individual users, it?s possible to setup an ad campaign that targets people based on sex, age, location, hobbies, interests, etc. ?This gives you the ability to write an ad that is extremely targeted toward the type of customer who would be most interested in your product or service.

    4) Pay Per View Advertising or (Cost Per View) ? with this type of advertising usually a network offers something of value such as software or a game. When a user downloads, they also agree to view relevant ads that the network chooses to show them. ?Generally the ads show up as either a pop-up or a pop-under in a new browser window. ?As an advertiser you bid on specific keywords that are matched to a relevant network ad offer. ??If you?re interested in this form of advertising, Media Traffic is one of the most popular PPV companies.

    5) Banner Advertising ? Banner ads have been around almost as long as the internet itself, but there?s a reason why you still see them on websites?they work. ?Banners are not only used to drive people to product offers, they?re also a great way to establish branding, usually a company name, product or logo. When used properly they can be highly effective. There are three different ways to get started with banner ads: You can exchange banner placements with another website owner, join a banner network like DoubleClick or BurstMedia, or join a banner exchange program such as LinkBuddies.

    6) YouTube ? YouTube sees over 800 million visitors per month. ?No traffic discussion would be complete without mentioning how you can use YouTube to direct traffic to your internet business. Your videos can show up in Google search results just like a blog post or an article. ?The idea is to come up with a clever video where people are directed to visit your site after viewing. You can include a link to your website in the video description and also the keywords that you?re targeting for search.

This is only a very short list of paid traffic offerings. ?When striving to build the best internet business possible, why leave anything on the table? You should evaluate any and all traffic options available to increase your sales. ?Free targeted traffic is obviously best, but it can take a long time for a new website to get established in search rankings. ?By using paid traffic techniques you can quickly test your offers and potentially make money right away.

Wed, 09 Jan 2013 06:19:20 -0800 'Tricorder' closer to reality: Portable X-ray source could put medical diagnosis and terrorism prevention in the palm of the hand http://moelerugo.posterous.com/tricorder-closer-to-reality-portable-x-ray-so http://moelerugo.posterous.com/tricorder-closer-to-reality-portable-x-ray-so

Jan. 8, 2013 ? The hand-held scanners, or tricorders, of the Star Trek movies and television series are one step closer to reality now that a University of Missouri engineering team has invented a compact source of X-rays and other forms of radiation. The radiation source, which is the size of a stick of gum, could be used to create inexpensive and portable X-ray scanners for use by doctors, as well as to fight terrorism and aid exploration on this planet and others.

"Currently, X-ray machines are huge and require tremendous amounts of electricity," said Scott Kovaleski, associate professor of electrical and computer engineering at MU. "In approximately three years, we could have a prototype hand-held X-ray scanner using our invention. The cell-phone-sized device could improve medical services in remote and impoverished regions and reduce health care expenses everywhere."

Kovaleski suggested other uses for the device. In dentists' offices, the tiny X-ray generators could be used to take images from the inside of the mouth shooting the rays outward, reducing radiation exposure to the rest of the patients' heads. At ports and border crossings, portable scanners could search cargoes for contraband, which would both reduce costs and improve security. Interplanetary probes, like the Curiosity rover, could be equipped with the compact sensors, which otherwise would require too much energy.

The accelerator developed by Kovaleski's team could be used to create other forms of radiation in addition to X-rays. For example, the invention could replace the radioactive materials, called radioisotopes, used in drilling for oil as well as other industrial and scientific operations. Kovaleski's invention could replace radioisotopes with a safer source of radiation that could be turned off in case of emergency.

"Our device is perfectly harmless until energized, and even then it causes relatively low exposures to radiation," said Kovaleski. "We have never really had the ability to design devices around a radioisotope with an on-off switch. The potential for innovation is very exciting."

The device uses a crystal to produce more than 100,000 volts of electricity from only 10 volts of electrical input with low power consumption. Having such a low need for power could allow the crystal to be fueled by batteries. The crystal, made from a material called lithium niobate, uses the piezoelectric effect to amplify the input voltage. Piezoelectricity is the phenomenon whereby certain materials produce an electric charge when the material is under stress.

Kovaleski's team published "Investigation of the Piezoelectric Effect as a Means to Generate X-Rays" in the journal IEEE Transaction on Plasma Science. Kovaleski is interim department chair of the Electrical & Computer Engineering in MU's Department of Engineering.

Well, she's showing off some fresh moves in the second season of her NBC show "Betty White's Off Their Rockers," which is set to air Tuesday, and she visited the show to talk about what viewers can expect. Like, say, PSY -- who joins in on a segment where he displays his "Gangnam Style."

It's possibly for the last time, since the singer has said he's retiring the hit. When told this, White remained magnanimous. "Now, what more can I serve humanity with?" she said.

But as she prepares for her "second-annual 90th birthday party," White still knows about how to keep it moving, dancing and otherwise. "Comedy is like music," she said. "It's a rhythm, and it's hard to teach it to somebody who doesn't have it."

Clearly, White has always had "it": As Lauer noted, off-camera when he asked if she had a favorite joke, she asked him back, "Does it have to be clean?"

She also returned later in the show with a clip from "Rockers" featuring Kim Kardashian, in which White discovered that the two of them are "distant cousins" and, since "you Kardashians share everything," White hinted she's hoping for a connection with Kim's boyfriend, Kanye West. Kim, needless to say, didn't take that well.

"There is a difference between love and sex, isn't there?" Kathie Lee Gifford then wondered to White.

"There is. I can't remember what it is, but ..." White riffed back.?

And as for that "second-annual" celebration, Gifford and Hoda Kotb got the party started early (White won't turn 91 until Jan. 17) with three cakes covered in what appeared to be 91 candles.

Check out the video for more!

"Betty White's Off Their Rockers" airs Tuesday at 8 p.m.

(AP) ? President Bashar Assad called on Syrians to defend their country against Islamic extremists seeking to destroy the nation, dismissing any prospect of dialogue with the "murderous criminals" he says are behind the uprising even as he outlined his vision for a peaceful settlement to the civil war.

In a one-hour speech to the nation in which he appeared confident and relaxed, Assad struck a defiant tone, ignoring international demands for him to step down and saying he is ready to hold a dialogue ? but only with those "who have not betrayed Syria."

He offered a national reconciliation conference, elections and a new constitution but demanded regional and Western countries stop funding and arming rebels trying to overthrow him first.

Syria's opposition swiftly rejected the proposal. Those fighting to topple the regime, including rebels on the ground, have repeatedly said they will accept nothing less than the president's departure, dismissing any kind of settlement that leaves him in the picture.

"It is an excellent initiative that is only missing one crucial thing: His resignation," said Kamal Labwani, a veteran secular dissident and member of the opposition's Syrian National Coalition umbrella group.

"All what he is proposing will happen automatically, but only after he steps down," Labwani told The Associated Press by telephone from Sweden.

On top of that, Assad's new initiative is reminiscent of symbolic changes and concessions that his government made earlier in the uprising, which were rejected at the time as too little too late.

Speaking at the Opera House in central Damascus, Assad told the hall packed with supporters ? who frequently broke out in cheers and applause ? that "we are in a state of war."

"We are fighting an external aggression that is more dangerous than any others, because they use us to kill each other," he said. "It is a war between the nation and its enemies, between the people and the murderous criminals."

Assad has rarely spoken since the uprising against his rule began in March 2011, and Sunday's speech was his first since June. His last public comments came in an interview in November to Russian TV in which he vowed to die in Syria.

On Sunday, he seemed equally confident in his troops' ability to crush the rebels fighting his rule, even as they edge in closer than ever to his seat of power, Damascus.

British Foreign Secretary William Hague said Assad's speech was "beyond hypocritical." In a message posted on his official Twitter feed, Hague said "empty promises of reform fool no one."

EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton's office said in a statement that the bloc will "look carefully if there is anything new in the speech but we maintain our position that Assad has to step aside and allow for a political transition."

Turkey's Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu said Assad's speech was filled with "empty promises" and repetitive pledges of reform by a president appeared out of touch with reality of the Syrian people.

"It seems (Assad) has shut himself in his room, and for months has read intelligence reports that are presented to him by those trying to win his favor," Davutoglu told reporters in the Aegean port city of Izmir on Sunday.

Turkey is a former ally of Damascus, and while Ankara first backed Assad after the uprising erupted, it turned against the regime after its violent crackdown on dissent.

At the end of his speech and as he was leaving the hall, he was mobbed by a group of loyalists shouting: "With our blood and souls we redeem you, Bashar!"

The president waved and blew kisses to the crowd on his way out.

Assad acknowledged the enormous impact of the conflict, which the United Nations recently estimated had killed more than 60,000 people.

"Suffering is overwhelming Syrian land. There is no place for joy in any corner of the country in the absence of security and stability," he said. "I look at the eyes of Syria's children and I don't see any happiness."

The Internet was cut in many parts of Damascus ahead of the address, apparently for security reasons.

As in previous speeches, Assad said his forces were fighting groups of "murderous criminals" and jihadi elements and denied that there was an uprising against his family's decades-long rule.

He stressed the presence of religious extremists and jihadi elements among those fighting in Syria, calling them "terrorists who carry the ideology of al-Qaida" and "servants who know nothing but the language of slaughter."

He said Syria will not take dictates from anyone ? a reference to outside powers ? and urged his countrymen to unite to save the nation.

Outlining his peace initiative, he said: "The first part of a political solution would require regional powers to stop funding and arming (the rebels), an end to terrorism and controlling the borders."

He said this would then be followed by dialogue and a national reconciliation conference and the formation of a wide representative government which would then oversee new elections, a new constitution and general amnesty.

Assad made clear his offer to hold a dialogue is not open to those whom he considers extremists or carrying out a foreign agenda, essentially eliminating anyone who has taken up arms against the regime.

"We never rejected a political solution ... but with whom should we talk? With those who have an extremist ideology, who only understand the language of terrorism?" he said. "Or should we with negotiate puppets whom the West brought?"

"We negotiate with the master, not with the slave," he said.

As in previous speeches and interviews, he clung to the view that the crisis in Syria was a foreign-backed agenda and said it was not an uprising against his rule.

"Is this a revolution and are these revolutionaries? By God, I say they are a bunch of criminals," he said.

(AP) ? An ex-con gunned down two firefighters after luring them to his neighborhood by setting a car and a house ablaze early Monday, then took shots at police and committed suicide while several homes burned.

Authorities used an armored vehicle to help residents flee dozens of homes on the shore of Lake Ontario a day before Christmas. Police restricted access to the neighborhood, and officials said it was not clear whether there were other bodies in the seven houses left to burn.

The sister of the gunman, who lived with him, was unaccounted for. The gunman's motive was unknown.

The gunman fired at the four firefighters when they arrived shortly after 5:30 a.m. at the blaze in Webster, a suburb of Rochester, town Police Chief Gerald Pickering said. The first police officer who arrived chased the suspect and exchanged gunfire.

He lay in wait outdoors for the firefighters' arrival, then opened fire probably with a rifle and from atop an earthen berm, Pickering said.

"It does appear it was a trap," he said.

The gunman, William Spengler, had served more than 17 years in prison for beating his 92-year-old grandmother to death with a hammer in 1980 at the house next to where Monday's attack happened, Pickering said at afternoon news conference. Spengler, 62, was paroled in 1998 and had led a quiet life since, authorities said. Convicted felons are not allowed to possess weapons.

Two firefighters, one of whom was also a town police lieutenant, died at the scene, and two others were hospitalized. An off-duty officer who was passing by was also injured.

Another police officer, the one who exchanged gunfire with Spengler, "in all likelihood saved many lives," Pickering said.

Emergency radio communications capture someone saying he "could see the muzzle flash coming at me" as Spengler carried out his ambush. The audio posted on the website RadioReference.com has someone reporting "firefighters are down" and saying "got to be rifle or shotgun ? high powered ... semi or fully auto."

Spengler lived in the house with his sister and mother, Arline, who died in October. He had originally been charged with second-degree murder in connection with grandmother Rose Spengler's death but pleaded guilty to a reduced charge of manslaughter.

The West Webster Fire District learned of the fire early Monday after a report of a car and house on fire on Lake Road, on a narrow peninsula where Irondequoit Bay meets Lake Ontario, Monroe County Sheriff Patrick O'Flynn said.

The fire appeared from a distance as a pulsating ball of flame glowing against the early morning sky, flames licking into treetops and reflecting on the water, with huge bursts of smoke billowing away in a brisk wind.

Two of the firefighters arrived on a fire engine and two in their own vehicles, Pickering said. After Spengler fired, one of the wounded men managed to flee, but the other three couldn't because of flying gunfire.

A police armored vehicle was used to recover two men, and eventually it evacuated 33 people from nearby homes, the police chief said. The gunfire initially kept firefighters from battling the blazes.

The dead men were identified as Police Lt. Michael Chiapperini, 43, the Webster Police Department's public information officer; and Tomasz Kaczowka, also a 911 dispatcher, whose age was not released.

Pickering described Chiapperini as a "lifetime firefighter" with nearly 20 years in the department, and called Kaczowka a "tremendous young man."

The two wounded firefighters, Joseph Hofstetter and Theodore Scardino, were in guarded condition in the intensive care unit at Strong Memorial Hospital, authorities said. Both were awake and alert and are expected to recover.

Hofstetter, also a full-timer with the Rochester Fire Department, was hit once in the pelvis, and the bullet lodged in his spine, authorities said. Scardino was hit in the chest and knee.

At West Webster Fire Station 1, there were at least 20 bouquets on a bench in front and a bouquet of roses with three gold-and-white ribbons saying, "May they rest in peace," ''In the line of duty" and "In memory of our fallen brothers."

A handwritten sign says, "Thanks for protecting us, RIP." Two candles were lit to honor the dead.

Grieving firefighters declined to talk to reporters. A memorial vigil was planned for early Monday evening.

The shooting and fires were in a neighborhood of seasonal and year-round homes set close together across the road from the lakeshore. The area is popular with recreational boaters but is normally quiet this time of year.

"We have very few calls for service in that location," Pickering said. "Webster is a tremendous community. We are a safe community, and to have a tragedy befall us like this is just horrendous."

O'Flynn lamented the violence, which comes on the heels of other shootings including the massacre of 20 students and six adults at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn.

"It's sad to see that that this is becoming more commonplace in communities across the nation," O'Flynn said.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo said the State Police and Office of Emergency Management were working with local authorities.

"Volunteer firefighters and police officers were injured and two were taken from us as they once again answered the call of duty," Cuomo said in a statement. "We as the community of New York mourn their loss as now two more families must spend the holidays without their loved ones."

Webster, a middle-class suburb, now is the scene of violence linked to house fires for two Decembers in a row.

Last Dec. 7, authorities say, a 15-year-old boy doused his home with gasoline and set it ablaze, killing his father and two brothers, 16 and 12. His mother and 13-year-old sister escaped with injuries. He is being prosecuted as an adult.

Mon, 24 Dec 2012 09:29:14 -0800 Follow This Advice To Make Commercial Real Estate ... - Maynas Eric http://moelerugo.posterous.com/follow-this-advice-to-make-commercial-real-es http://moelerugo.posterous.com/follow-this-advice-to-make-commercial-real-es

Industrial property and other commercial properties are going up on the market all the time, but this type of property does not get preferential listings like regular homes. You have to know where to find these properties, and this article will give you the tools you need to do just that.

Take some time to visit websites that are devoted to commercial real estate. These sites have lots of information for both new investors and seasoned professionals. Excessive knowledge isn?t a problem you have to worry about, so it always proves smart to learn all you can.

Look around at the general environment around the building. The one who?ll have to clean up any environmental waste on your property is you. Do you want to buy property in a area that is prone to flooding? If so, think again. It?s possible to get information specific to the locale you?re considering by contacting environmental assessment agencies in that area.

TIP! Before buying a piece of commercial property, decide what you intend to do with the property once you buy it. Do you plan on having your own business on the property or do you plan on leasing it? When you have specific guidelines for what kind of commercial property you are looking for, you can narrow down the results to save time and effort.

Document your business needs prior to hunting for commercial property. Determine what sort of office you will need to run your business. Perhaps you could buy more than you need right now if you can afford to and you plan on expanding your business.

If you are planning to rent your commercial properties once you purchase them, opt for solidly constructed buildings that are simple in their design. Tenants will be more likely to rent space in this type of building, as it looks taken care of. Since these properties probably do not need many repairs, they will require less maintenance from the owner and tenants.

In the beginning, a great deal of time might be required to spend on your investment. It takes time to find a lucrative opportunity and purchase a propriety, adding to that time to carry out any repairs and alterations that are needed. Don?t abandon you commercial real estate venture because it currently consumes so much of your time. Once you get the property ready, you will be compensated for years to come.

TIP! Investors of commercial properties should be mindful that the specter of massive inflation always looms on the horizon of the coming years. In years gone by, leases might have a clause to protect signers from rapid inflation.

Ask any potential broker about what experience they have had with commercial property before choosing someone to represent your interests. Make certain that they have experience and expertise in the community you are dealing in. Entering into an exclusive contract with that particular broker is a good idea.

Try to get a lender who can make commercial property offers. Ask friends or investors you know to give you a list of the lenders they prefer. Do some research, and select the one that can help you reach your goals prior to purchasing the property. If you are willing to devote the time to covering all of your bases, you can improve your chances of qualifying for a loan.

Make sure you have sufficient utility to access on any commercial piece of real estate. Every business requires certain utilities, most commonly things like water, sewage and electricity.

TIP! When buying commercial property, think about the socioeconomic status of the neighborhood around the building. Your business might do better in affluent communities, since your prospective foot traffic has more money.

    Real Estate

Avoid signing a standard lease for your commercial real estate property. It is not uncommon for real estate brokers to include detailed, confusing terms and clauses into the lease. Only by going through the document with care can you prevent the potential pains and aches that you can get from standard commercial lease paperwork.

One major part of commercial real estate deals is inspections. When property you are involved in is being inspected, take steps to verify the legitimacy of every inspector. Many people in certain fields are not accredited, including pest and insect removal services. You?ll have less problems after the sale, as such.

TIP! Ensure that you have reviewed your contracts before negotiating leases so that you minimize the chances of default. That will cut down on the likelihood that the tenant defaults on a lease.

Establish what you need before searching in commercial real estate. Take the time to outline what your needs may be, from number of rooms to types of spaces needed. This should include the appropriate number of washrooms based on people present.

Be sure to only focus on one investment at a time. Focusing on offices, land, retail or apartments will help you do well with investing. You can?t be successful if you try to focus on more than one type of real estate investment at a time. Choose one type of investment and put all your attention on making it successful. You are better off becoming a master of one arena than mediocre with many.

    Dual Agency

TIP! If you are novice investor, you should start off with just one single type of investment. Select the type of property upon which you wish to focus, and pay close attention to your dealings.

If the agent you are thinking of hiring for your commercial real estate transaction gives you any disclosure forms, make sure you read them carefully. Dual agency is a possibility that you need to be aware of. Dual agency in real estate is when the agency works for both parties. Dual agency occurs when the landlord and the tenant hire the same agent. Dual agency should be disclosed and both parties should agree to it.

You should always know who takes care of emergency repairs. Ask in advance who will be handling any emergencies that arise. Be aware of the response time of emergency personnel, and be sure to have their contact information handy. Use any information you can get from your landlord so contingencies are ready for the times your normal business operations are interrupted so you can safeguard your customer service and your reputation.

Posting a newsletter online, using social media or otherwise staying in touch with previous clients helps investors remember to send new clients your way. After you have finished a deal, don?t vanish from sight online.

TIP! Choose a reputable business where they strive for exceptional customer service. Otherwise, it might cost you a lot of money in the future for something you could have easily avoided.

Use your blog to establish an expert reputation. This helps to attract potential buyers if you have something for sale or lease.

There are several strategies you can utilize to reduce the amount of money you spend on environmental cleanup. First off, you may not be liable for cleanup expenses if you do not hold ownership interest, but if you do, you are on the hook. Clean up for the space and disposal of waste from the property can cost a great deal of money. Try to get an environmental report from any environmental assessment companies. They are somewhat expensive, but the consequences of not doing this can be even more expensive.

Finding the proper commercial property is just half the battle. Every bit of information can make a difference.

TIP! Be sure about the correct square footage available. It is common for commercial properties to be described in terms of usable square feet in which an enterprise would actually operate, or in terms of total square feet, which encompasses walls and non-usable area.

Scientists have shed light on why some people are more susceptible to gout than others. A study has identified 18 new genetic variations that increase levels of uric acid in the blood, which is the main cause of the disease. High levels of uric acid form small crystals in joints and tissues, causing pain and swelling the main symptoms of the condition once known as the 'disease of kings'.

Gout is the most common form of inflammatory arthritis, affecting up to two per cent of the world's population. Understanding how these common genetic variants increase uric acid levels in the blood may lead to improvements in the treatment and prevention of the disease. It could also help research into urate-lowering drugs.

The international team of researchers, including scientists from the University of Edinburgh and Queen Mary, University of London, say gout is becoming more common in the developed world.

They attribute its rise in part to increasing levels of obesity and an aging population.

This painful joint inflammation affects at least one in seventy adults in the UK with approximately 900,000 people suffering at least one attack of gout in their lifetime.

The work, published in Nature Genetics, was carried out by analysing the genetic data of more than 140,000 people, from more than 70 individual studies from Europe, the U.S., Japan and Australia and represents the largest study worldwide on this topic.

Dr Veronique Vitart, from the Medical Research Council Human Genetics Unit at the University of Edinburgh, and one of the lead authors of the study said: "Abnormal levels of uric acid have been associated with various common diseases and conditions, but causal relationships are not always clear. Gaining insight into the genetic components of uric acid levels offers a very useful tool to tackle these issues and to further our understanding of these conditions."

Professor Mark Caulfield, from the William Harvey Research Institute at Queen Mary, and a lead author said: "Existing therapies to avoid attacks of gout sometimes cause side effects. Our findings identify new potential mechanisms for gout and offer opportunities for new therapies which may improve prevention of this debilitating condition in the future.

Mon, 03 Dec 2012 11:14:37 -0800 Kuwait boycott bloc hails lower voter turnout http://moelerugo.posterous.com/kuwait-boycott-bloc-hails-lower-voter-turnout http://moelerugo.posterous.com/kuwait-boycott-bloc-hails-lower-voter-turnout

KUWAIT CITY (AP) ? Opposition groups in Kuwait hailed their election boycott as a success Sunday after officials said voter turnout on Saturday was sharply lower than during the last parliamentary races earlier this year.

Kuwait's Ministry of Information said 40.3 percent of eligible voters cast ballots. That compares with nearly 60 percent in the February elections.

As expected, the results point to a solidly pro-government chamber. Three women are among the new 50-seat parliament, which is expected to hold its first session within two weeks after the end of procedural issues to name a new government.

A wide-reaching opposition coalition, including conservative Islamists and Western-leaning liberals, boycotted the vote to protest alleged power abuses by the ruling family. They have vowed to press ahead with street demonstrations despite a ban on major political gatherings in public.

Kuwait's parliament is the most politically powerful among the Gulf Arab states, but the ruling establishment controls all key government posts and policies.
